Decatur, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball team (2-3 overall) won its second consecutive contest at the 2013 Charger Chillout by blanking Franklin Pierce (2-3 overall) 5-0 behind the pitching of freshman Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.).

Butler (1-2) earned her first collegiate win by hurling a one-hit shutout against the Ravens.

FPU's Courtney Caputo led off the contest with a single to right field and was uanble to advance to third one-out later on a fielder's choice.  Butler then retired 14 in a row, until FPS's leadoff batter in the sixth reached on an error.  She then retired the final six hitters to complete the shutout.  Butler finished with 12 strikeouts and no walks.

The WSU offense scored three times in the bottom of the first off FPU starter Tricia Hansen (0-2).  Junior Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic).  Junior Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) singled to right plating White with the game's first run.  Butler followed with a double scoring Fulton all the way from first.  Sophomore Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) stroked a two-out hit scoring Butler.

Freshman Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) began the second inning with a single to right and White followed with an infield hit.  McGarr laid down her second sacrifice bunt of the game putting two runners in scoring position.  Williams scored on a ground out, with White crossing the plate on a single by Butler.

The Warriors finished with nine hits - two each by Fulton, Butler and sophomore Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) with Fulton and Butler each driving in two.

FPU's Hansen allowed all five runs (three earned) on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings, while Jessica Wile pitched the final 3 2/3 innings allowing just one hit.

Wayne State will conclude tournament play on Sunday afternoon with a contest against the defending national champions from Valdosta State.
