Decatur, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball team (2-4 overall) concluded play at the 2013 Charger Chillout with a 5-1 setback to Valdosta State (9-1 overall), the defending national champions.
The Warriors were limited to three hits, all singles, by
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.),
Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) and
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) in the loss to the Blazers.
WSU scored its lone run in the top of the sixth as McGarr led off with a walk. McGarr advanced to second when Butler reached on an error, advanced to third on a walk to
Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) and scored when
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) reached on an error.
VSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a one-out single, a fielder's choice, a stolen base and an RBI single by Ashley Steinhilber. The Blazers increased their lead in the fourth as Steinhilber hit a 3-2 offering over the left center field fence.
Karson King hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth making it 4-0, before the aforementioned Warrior run. VSU completed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a single, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a squeeze bunt.
Sophomore
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) went the distance in the circle for WSU allowing five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
Kenzi Reed started for VSU and surrendered the unearned run on two hits in 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and five walks. Brianna Hancock entered the game with the bases loaded and one out and retired five of the last six batters to earn the save.
Wayne State will travel to Salisbury, N.C. next weekend (Feb. 22-24) for the Catawba Invitational. WSU will play Davis & Elkins and Kutztown on Friday.
