Box Score
Lakeland, Fla. - The Wayne State baseball team wrapped up its fifth game in three days on Sunday with a 6-3 win over Winona State. The Warriors went 2-3 over the three day stretch.
Senior
Ethan Vasiliauskas (South Rockwood, Mich. / Carleton) took the mound for the Warriors in this one and jumped out to a great start. The right-hander used three grounders to short in the first and an eight pitch inning in the second to get WSU off to a great start.
The offense jumped out early again as
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort) ripped an RBI two-out single that scored
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and gave the Warriors a quick 1-0 lead.
In the third inning things opened up offensively. Wayne State got an RBI single by Guenther scoring
Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) and giving the Green and Gold a 2-0. Winona State would respond in the bottom of the third however, Winona would load the bases with two outs before connecting on a two-run single to left followed by another RBI single to center giving the Winona Warriors the lead after three 3-2.
Wayne State would come firing back in the fourth.
Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) recorded an infield single that scored one, AJ Matos (Southgate, Mich. / Detroit Western) followed that up with a safety squeeze that tacked on another run for WSU. Freshman
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich. / St. Clair) came up after a Walker earned a base on balls and ripped a single to left driving in a third run in the inning and giving the Warriors a 5-3 lead after four.
Vasiliauskas remained on the hill into the eighth where his offense would pick him up some insurance. Cunningham would single to start off the inning and on a sacrifice bunt by Matos nobody was covering third and Cunningham would swipe the bag.
Cameron Walker would sacrifice squeeze Cunningham in to manufacture yet another run. Vasiliaukas kept rolling as he got out of the eighth with a double play and a strike out to protect the 6-3 Wayne State lead.
Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) would come on to close this game out on a trio of ground balls.
Next up for the Warriors is the University of Tampa on Monday at 6:00 pm.
