Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team bounced back from a pair of Monday losses and two rainouts on Tuesday to defeat #34 Adelphi (8-5 overall) 4-2 Wednesday morning. The Warriors (6-8 overall) suffered a 5-4 extra inning setback to St. Cloud State (13-9 overall) in game two on Wednesday.
WSU will continue play in the Rebel Spring Games on Friday against Southwest Minnesota State at 1 p.m. and Lees-McRae at 3 p.m.
In the opener, the Warriors scored in the top of the first as junior second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) laced a leadoff double to left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior outfielder
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.). With two outs, sophomore first baseman
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) doubled down the left field line scoring Fulton.
The Panthers knotted the game at one in the bottom of the third on a single, a stolen base and a double.
WSU snapped the 1-1 deadlock with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. White and senior outfielder
Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) had back-to-back infield singles, then Bryce moved up both runners with a sacrifice bunt. White scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman
Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic), while Foreman scored on an RBI single to center by sophomore
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem).
A leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth made it a one-run game, but Wayne State added an insurance run in the seventh as Fulton smacked a two-out shot to left field.
Freshman
Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) started in the circle for the Warriors and allowed two earned runs on seven hits in six innings to earn the victory. Lee retired three of the four batters she faced in the seventh for her second save of the campaign.
Fulton and Lee each had two hits for WSU, who was out-hit 8-7 in the contest.
In the nightcap, the Huskies scored once in the top of the first manufacturing a run on a single, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
SCSU increased its lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a leadoff home run by Kelly Olson and went ahead 3-0 in the sixth on a pair of singles sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt.
Wayne State rallied with three in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game at three. Foreman singled, Bryce walked and McGarr singled as the first three all reached to load the bases. Lee drilled a two-run single to left center, with McGarr scoring on a throwing error by the Huskies.
After a scoreless seventh frame, the international tiebreaker rule went into effect in the eighth.
After the SCSU runner (Breana Canova) was placed on second, a sacrifice bunt moved her to third. Pinch-hitter Natalie Shaft was hit by a pitch, then stole second. Canova scored on an RBI single by Megan Lehnen with Shaft scoring on a base hit by Olson.
WSU's McGarr was placed on second and she advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch as all three Warrior batters in the eighth were retired.
Foremand and McGarr each had two hits for Wayne State.
Lee started for WSU before giving way to
Emily Wickerham (North Branch, Mich.) in the sixth. Lee pinch-hit for Wickerham in the bottom of the sixth and pitched the final two innings.
All told, Lee allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and six walks. Wickerham faced three batters allowing one hit.
