Auburndale, Fla. -- Wayne State (9-6) wrapped up its Florida Spring Break trip with two wins over Minnesota-Duluth (0-8) on Saturday. The Warriors took game one 12-3 and game two 7-4 to give the offense 35 runs in its last three contests.
Game One (W, 12-3)
Eric Cunningham went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI to lead a maturing Wayne State offense in the game one win.
Wayne State fell behind early again as UMD scored a run in the top of the first on a Alex Wojciechowski double off of WSU starter
Kyle Zimmerman (1-1). The Bulldogs added to its lead with another run in the second inning after Ryan Lakin started the inning with a triple and Lucas Steinbach singled him home.
The Warrior offense continued to be solid with four runs to take a 4-2 lead on three hits and two UMD errors.
Kasey Koster began the inning with a single and Cunningham reached on an error. The second UMD miscue of the inning plated a run and
A.J. Matos singled in another run.
Justin Sherman followed with an RBI single and
Kenny Davis grounded out to shortstop to plate the third run of the inning.
UMD pulled within a run, 4-3, after scoring one run on three hits in the fourth inning.
Wayne State pulled away with three runs on four hits in the fifth inning highlighted by two doubles from
Brad Guenther and Cunningham. WSU plated five more in the sixth inning on three hits and another UMD error.
Chris Gebara singled in two of the runs while Cunningham stayed hot with an RBI single.
Zimmerman finished with six innings of work, allowing nine hits and three runs while striking out five.
Jimmy Jackson tosses a scoreless seventh to secure the 12-3 victory.
Game Two (W, 7-4)
A four run third inning led Wayne State to its third straight win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, 7-4. The Warriors pounded out 11 hits as Matos led the way with a 3-for-4 day with one RBI. Sherman also collected three hits while Gebara drove in two runs.
In what is becoming a pattern, UMD scored first with one run on three hits in the bottom of the first.
Wayne State scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-1 advantage. Guenther singled to begin the inning, advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third base. Cunningham drew a walk before Gebara drove in a run on fielder's choice. Zimmerman singled in a run and Jackson followed with an RBI double. Matos closed the scoring with an RBI single to plate Jackson.
The Bulldogs kept the game close with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning. However, WSU added to its lead with two more runs in the fourth inning.
UMD collected a run in its half of the fourth inning, supplemented by a WSU error, to make the score 6-4 in favor of the Warriors.
Wayne State added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on a error charged to the UMD shortstop.
Clayton Ruch picked up his third save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning to deliver a 7-4 victory to conclude its Florida trip.
Wayne State was schedule to host Ashland for a doubleheader on Wednesday but winter weather forced those two games to be postponed. The Warriors are schedule to play at Walsh with the three-game series beginning on Saturday at 1 p.m.
