Winter Haven, Fla. -- The Wayne State (7-6) baseball team split a Friday doubleheader against No. 20 Slippery Rock (9-3) on Friday. The Warriors fell 3-2 in game and crusied past The Rock in game two, 16-2.
Game One (L, 2-3)
The Warriors lost a very evenly matched game one of the doubleheader, 3-2, as the offense was only able to muster three hits off three Slippery Rock hurlers.
Slippery Rock put a run on the board in the top of the first inning on a single by Graeme Zaparzynski following a hit-by-pitch and a throwing error. WSU starter
Ethan Vasiliauskas (2-1) worked 5.0 innings and allowed all three runs while striking out four.
Wayne State evened the score with a run in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from
Chris Gebara after
Kyle Zimmerman drew a walk and
Eric Cunningham singled.
Slippery Rock broke the tie with two runs in their half of the fourth with five straight hits including an RBI single from Brandon Myers and Jake Nogalo.
Anthony Naso exited the bullpen to replace The Rock's starter Garret Peterson (2-0) to begin the bottom of the fifth inning. Wayne State took advantage and cut the deficit in half, 3-2. Following a
Justin Sherman single, a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt, Sherman was able to score on another wild pitch.
John Kovalik stymied the WSU momentum with 2.2 innings of hitless baseball including three strikeouts to pick up his third save of the season.
Kirk Stambaugh and
Taylor Horn teamed up for two scoreless innings for the Warriors.
Game Two (W, 16-2)
Wayne State was saving all of its offense for game two in a 16-2 win over Slippery Rock. The 16 runs is a season-high. Cunningham, Gebara and Sherman all drove in three runs as Gebara finished 4-for-5. The Warriors totaled 16 hits and drew six walks.
The Rock scored first again on two hits and one error in the bottom of the first.
WSU took the lead, 2-1, in the third inning powered by singles from Brad Geunther and
Kasey Koster. In the fifth inning, the Warriors added to its lead with a five-spot on five hits and one error. A double from Zimmerman did the most damage in the inning.
The WSU train kept rolling with two more runs in the sixth on three hits, with both runs coming off a Cunningham single.
The Rock added a run on two hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-2 in favor of the Green & Gold. The offense exploded in the top of the seventh with seven runs on just three hits and one error. The Rock walked the first three Warrior hitters to step to the plate. A wild pitch and error allowed the first two runs to score. A Gebara double plated two before a Sherman single sent two more home to make the final score 16-2.
Alex Pierse (1-1) went a solid 6.0 innings allowing just one earned run, walking three and striking out three for his first win of the season. Christian Bilkoviv threw a scoreless seventh to seal the win.
Wayne State will conclude its trip to Florida with two games with Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday with the first game set for 3 p.m.
