North Canton, Ohio -- Wayne State (11-7, 2-1) won its seventh GLIAC opening series in the last 11 seasons with a 5-3 win at Walsh (7-5, 1-2) on Sunday.
Starter
David Frederick (1-1) went seven innings for his first win of the season, while allowing just two unearned runs and striking out three.
The Warriors loaded the bases in the top of the first inning but Walsh's starter David Roper (1-1) was able to work around the jam without allowing any runs.
Two WSU errors allowed Walsh to put runners at the corners and a fielder's choice gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Wayne State answered with a run to tie the game at 1-1 in the second inning on an RBI groundout from
Brad Guenther.
Kyle Zimmerman walked and
Chris Gebara reached on an error following a sacrifice bunt.
Eric Cunningham flied out to left field to plate Zimmerman on the sacrifice fly, giving WSU a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
Wayne State's third error of the day allowed a run to score and tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. The Cavaliers nearly took a 3-2 lead but left fielder
Kasey Koster threw out Steve Wido at home to end the threat in sixth inning.
Mike Daugherty replaced Walsh starting pitcher David Roper in the seventh inning. Koster singled and Zimmerman walked to begin the frame. Gebara gave Wayne State a 3-2 lead on an infield single.
A single from Cunningham and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one away for pinch-hitter
Jimmy Jackson. Jackson drew a walk to extend the visitor's lead to 4-2.
Frederick followed with a shut down seventh inning.
Greg Spiess replaced Frederick to begin the eighth inning. Wido brought Walsh within a run, 4-3, with a home run to right field in the bottom of the eighth.
The Cavaliers' comeback attempt continued in the eighth inning with back-to-back singles to load the bases. However, a double play ended the inning with the Warriors' 4-3 lead still intact.
Jackson doubled home Gebara for an insurance run in the ninth inning, making it 5-3 in favor of the Warriors. Ruch worked around a lead off single to secure the win and collect his fifth save of the season.
The Warriors will play a doubleheader at Ashland on Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.
