Ashland Sweeps Thursday Doubleheader

Wayne State ropped opened its home schedule with two losses.

Detroit -- Wayne State (11-9, 2-3) opened up its home schedule on Thursday afternoon but Ashland (16-4, 5-0) spoiled the party by sweeping the doubleheader. The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in game one but the Eagles would come back and win, 5-2. Wayne State was able to score first again in game two but Ashland used big second, third and fourth innings to win, 7-4. The doubleheader began a streak of eight games in five days for WSU.

Game One (L, 2-5)
Wayne State started fast off of Ashland's starter Brad Thomas (4-1) with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Following an error, Brad Guenther hit a laser over the right field wall for his third home run of the season.

Ashland answered with a run in the top of the second powered by three hits including an RBI-single from Wade Kaido. The Eagles kept the momentum with two more run in the third inning. An Alex Sortwell triple drove in the run. The visitors were able to extend its lead to 5-2 in the fourth with two more runs supplemented by a WSU error.

Kyle Zimmerman (1-2) went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs, three of them earned and striking out six. Brandyn Hall tossed the final 3.0 innings and di not allow a run on just two hits.

Thomas went all 7.0 innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Kenny Davis, Kasey Koster and Chris Gebara accounted for the other three hits.

Game Two (L, 4-7)
A line drive double play in the first inning sparked Wayne State to jump ahead 1-0 on a RBI double from Guenther.

Ashland was up to the task as it took the lead 2-1, with two runs in the second inning. John Broll and Mike Lewandowski both drove in runs in the frame.

The Warriors looked to answer immediately in its half of the second with two hits but a runner picked off at first ended the inning.

Ashland started the third inning with three straight hits including a leadoff double from Austin Walts. Tyler Gray sent a single through the left side for an RBI and Broll followed with a two-run single to left center to make it 5-1.

WSU would pull within two, 5-3, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. The first three Wayne State hitters reached and Kasey Koster drove in a run with a single through the right side. However, Ashland avoided the big inning with a 6-4-3 double play. Guenther scored in the double play.

The Eagles continued to apply pressure with its offense as it tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. Sortwell flew out to right field to plate Kaido and Broll double to left field to give Ashland a 7-3 lead.

Koster singled up the middle to score Guenther to put the Warriors within striking distance, 7-4. However, Ashland would throw zeros in the final two innings including a perfect seventh from Zach Botjer for hiss third save of the season.

Wayne State starter Greg Spiess  (1-2) last just 3.0 innings, allowing five earned runs. Alex Kinch and Brock Bates teamed up for the final 4.0 innings of work. Bates did not allow a run in his 3.2 innings.

Vince Frate (1-1) went 6.0 innings and scattered nine hits, allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts.

Guenther, Koster and Kyle Zimmerman all logged multiple-hit games.

The home stand continues on Friday with a doubleheader against Lake Erie beginning at 2 p.m.
