Detroit -- Wayne State (13-10, 4-4) won the series with Lake Erie (6-15, 3-6) on Friday with a sweep of the doubleheader, outscoring the Storm 22-2. Lake Erie took its turn on Saturday putting on an offensive show, winning the series finale, 11-4. A pair of five run innings early in the contest was too big of a hole for the Warriors to overcome.
The Storm scored five runs in the top of the first inning on five hits including a three-run, opposite field home run over "The Green Monster" from Aaron Lindgren.
WSU answered with a pair of runs in their half of the first on an
Eric Cunningham single back up the middle.
Lake Erie put another five-spot on the scoreboard in the third inning to stretch its lead to 10-2. Cody Blood doubled in three runs while a Wayne State error extended the frame. Lindgren drove in another run in the sixth inning with a single down the right field line.
The Green & Gold began the eighth inning with a double from
Jimmy Jackson followed by an
A.J. Matos walk. A fielding error allowed
Brad Guenther to reach before
Kasey Koster drove in a run with a fielder's choice ground out. The second Lake Erie error of the inning allowed the second and final run of the inning to cross before a pop out ended the home threat.
Wayne State would put two runners on in the ninth inning but the game ended on back-to-back strikeouts.
Lake Erie's starter Adam Beach (2-3) went 7.0 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out six. Heath Kelley and Doug Fox combined for the final 2.0 innings and did not allow a hit.
David Frederick (1-2) lasted just 2.2 innings and was roughed up for seven earned runs.
Kirk Stambaugh,
Clayton Ruch and
Taylor Horn combined for the final 6.1 innings. Ruch threw two scoreless innings.
Wayne State will host Malone for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
