Game 1
Auburndale, Fla. - The Wayne State baseball team (3-2) split a doubleheader with Notre Dame College (8-10) on Friday in the first games of its spring break trip. In the first game of the twinbill, the Warriors dropped a 4-3 decision to the Falcons in seven innings followed by a 15-4 drubbing of NDC in Game 2.
The Warriors jumped out early in the first after
Kenny Davis (Wyoming, Mich. / Lee),
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort) all singled in consecutive at-bats with Zimmerman's hit driving in Davis for the games first run.
Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich. / Troy) would pick up an RBI with a sac fly in the Warriors next at bat and quickly it was 2-0 Wayne State.
Senior
Greg Spiess (Saline, Mich. / Saline) took the hill for the Green and Gold and picked up a pair of strikeouts to go along with a pickoff by battery mate Guenther to quickly retire the side in the first.
Notre Dame would get after Spiess in the third inning however after a double to center drove in two for the Falcons. NDC would get a third run on a two-out single to left making it a 3-2 ballgame.
The Warriors left the fourth and fifth innings with double plays. In the bottom of the fifth
Brock Bates (Delta, Ohio / Evergreen) would give up a single to center, pick up a pair of outs and then give up an RBI double to right before getting out with WSU down 4-2.
Freshman
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich. / St. Clair) would get the Warriors back into this one with an RBI double down the left field line driving in
Jimmy Jackson (Battle Creek, Mich. / Pennfield) cutting the NDC lead to 4-3.
Bates would close the sixth for WSU and in the top of the seventh the Warriors would get runners to second and third with two outs before the Notre Dame pitcher picked up the game clinching strikeout to seal this game away.
Game 2
Wayne State would be the home team in nightcap with
Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) taking the mound for the Warriors. His outing would be short however as Kinch would walk the first batter, hit the second and walk the third batter before hitting the clean-up hitter and NDC was on the board early 1-0. Coach
Ryan Kelley would replace Kinch with junior
Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio / Southview) after the fourth batter of the game.
Stambaugh would strike out the next two batters before a fielder's choice to short would get the Warriors out of the top of the first.
Kenny Davis and Guenther singled in the bottom of the first and after a strikeout the Warriors would draw three straight walks to even the game at one run apiece. A balk would later score
Jimmy Jackson and again WSU was on top early 2-1.
A pair of triples for NDC and a pair of errors by WSU vaulted the Falcons out to a 4-2 lead after the top of the second. The Warriors would bounce back however as Zimmerman would drive in
Kenny Davis with a single to left cutting the deficit to 4-3.
The third and fourth innings were very quiet before the Warriors came alive. In the fifth the WSU defense turned a double play and then the offense broke this game wide open.
Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) ripped a single off the shortstops glove after a pair of Warriors were hit by a pitch driving in
Chris Gebara. A NDC error allows
Kenny Davis to reach and a Guenther strikeout featured runners in motion and a throw down to third that ended up in left field giving the Warriors two more insurance runs.
All in all, WSU would send 14 batters to the plate in the fifth and put up eight runs making it a 12-4 ballgame. WSU would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth and close this game out 15-4 earning a split of the doubleheader against Notre Dame College.
Next up for WSU will be another twinbill on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. against Gannon.
