Warrior Baseball Drops Double Dip to Gannon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Winter Haven, Fla. -  The Wayne State baseball team (3-4) played its second doubleheader in as many days on Saturday this time against Gannon University. The Warriors dropped the first game 3-2 on a walk-off single to right and game two on a seventh inning walk also by a score of 3-2.

Game 1

The Warriors were the visitors in the first game and opened things up right away. Senior Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) ripped a double to right and then sophomore Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich. / Frankfort) drove Guenther in with a single to right in the next at bat giving WSU a fast 1-0 lead. The run by Guenther moved him into10th place all time in runs scored for the Warriors.

Fellow senior Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) started on the bump for the Green and Gold and threw a gem early on. In the third Pierse got into a bit of a jam when the leadoff hitter reached on a single and then advanced to third on a pickoff error followed by another error on Guenther behind the plate trying to throw the runner out. Pierse would recover however and strand the runner after a strikeout, a liner to second and inducing a groundout back to the mound to get out of the third with a 1-0 lead in tact.

The fourth garnered a run for each team as Guenther drove in freshman Hank Van Ooyen (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) with a single to center and Gannon matched a pair of singles with a HBP and a walk to make it a 2-1 Wayne State lead after four innings.

The Golden Knights would tie this one up at two in the fifth with a two-out single to left field.

Jimmy Jackson (Battle Creek, Mich. / Pennfield) took over on the hill entering the sixth and earned two ground outs to third with a strikeout in between and this one was all knotted up entering the final frame.

The Warriors failed to muster a run in the top of the seventh and Jackson headed back out looking to get to the eighth. Jackson hit the first batter and then gave up a single to right. After a ground out to the mound and an intentional walk the Golden Knights had the bases loaded with two outs. A walk-off single to right would seal the deal as the Warriors drop the opener of a doubleheader for the second day in a row.

Game 2

There weren't many changes for Coach Ryan Kelley in game two as David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview) took the ball for the Warriors, who would serve as the home team in the nightcap.

After giving up a lead off single, WSU quickly erased that runner as Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) would throw him out attempting a steal of second. Frederick would get out of the first with a ground out and a fly out.

The fireworks started there for the Green and Gold as Guenther would draw yet another walk to give the Warriors their first base runner. A strikeout was followed by a two-out two-run homerun by Kasey Koster (Portage, Mich. / Central), his first of the year and gave WSU the early 2-0 lead.

An error by Kenny Davis at short was compounded by a wild pitch followed by a passed ball and Gannon had a runner on third with no outs. Frederick would induce a grounder to second that would get an out but surrender a run. The Warriors were caught looking in three straight at-bats clinging to a 2-1 lead after two innings.

The contest remained at 2-1 entering the fifth inning where Gannon would find the game-tying run. The Golden Knights started the inning with a pair of singles but Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) did his best to get the Warriors out ouf the inning. Walker took a routine fly ball in left to record the first out of the fifth and then gunned down the runner tagging up at the plate for the double play. An error at second base would allow the tying run to score however and after a scoreless sixth we headed to the final stanza tied at two runs apiece.

David Frederick hit a pair of batters which ushered in Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood), who gave up a single to load the bases and followed that with a walk giving Gannon a 3-2 lead. Ruch picked up a double play when he got a groundball and delivered it to Cunningham behind the plate who tossed to first to pick up the double play to get out of the seventh.

The Warriors Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich. / St. Clair) would fly out to center, Daniel Peake (Mississauga, Ont. / Lorne Park) would ground out to second and Cunningham would strike out to end the game.

The Warriors fall to 3-4 on the year and will get back to work on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Winona State.
