Chargers Hand Warriors 6-1 Loss in Series Finale

Hillsdale, Mich. --
Wayne State (22-11, 12-5) had won nine straight entering Sunday's series finale at Hillsdale (13-18, 6-12).  However, solid pitching, timely hitting and three Wayne State double plays resulted in a 6-1 Charger victory.
 
Hillsdale starter Kris Morris (2-7) went 7.2 innings and allowed one unearned run, striking out three. Hillsdale collected 12 hits and a three-run second inning would set the tone for the home team on Sunday.
 
Wayne State still sits alone in first place in the GLIAC standings with 13 games left on the schedule. This most recent series victory was WSU's fifth GLIAC series victory of the season.
 
The Chargers used four hits including a two-run triple from Geordy Smith to take an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Brad Guenther reached on a fielding error before Kasey Koster ripped and RBI-double into right field for the first and only Wayne State run of the day. A line-drive double play off Jimmy Jackson's bat slowed the Warriors' momentum in the inning.
 
Another double play turned by Hillsdale stymied a rally in the top of the fifth inning following back-to-back singles.
 
Mike Vanchieri doubled to center field to give his Chargers a 4-1 lead, A solid relay between Eric Cunningham to Jeremy Carrell cut down a second run from scoring at home.
 
Taylor Horn was called on from the bullpen to replace starter Brandyn Hall (2-1). Vanchieri was tagged out trying to steal home to end the fifth inning. Hall's line to finish the day was 4.2 innings pitched with four earned runs, while hitting two batters.
 
Scott Lantis connected for a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to stretch the home lead to 5-1. Tad Sobieszczanski drove in another run in the seventh to make the final score 6-1.
 
Wayne State will return home for five straight contests beginning with Tiffin on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
