North Canton, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball team (17-16 overall, 8-5 GLIAC) improved to 5-0 in road league contests with a 5-2 triumph Tuesday afternoon at Walsh University (15-15 overall, 6-12 GLIAC).  Walsh led the second game 1-0 in the fourth inning when rain forced the cancellation.

The host Cavaliers scored in the bottom of the first on a single, two ground outs and an RBI single.

Walsh scored once in the bottom of the third to increase its lead to 2-0 and could have tallied more runs but junior centerfielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) nailed a runner at the plate who was trying to score from first on a double.  It was White's team-leading fourth outfield assist of the season.

White then reached leading off the top of the fourth as the WU right fielder misplayed a fly ball.  Senior right fielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) was hit by a pitch putting runners on the corners.  Sophomore first baseman Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) followed with an RBI single for her team-leading 27th RBI.  A sacrifice bunt by freshman third baseman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) advanced both runners into scoring position, and sophomore pitcher Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) put the Warriors in front for good with a two-run single to center field.

Walsh had a leadoff double in the fifth, but Lee retired the next six batters until a leadoff walk in the seventh.  A strikeout and a single brought the tying run to the plate but Lee induced a line out and a fly out to end the game.

WSU had increased its lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.  Freshman shortstop Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) was hit by a pitch with two outs and advanced all the way to third as freshman left fielder Catherine Rayos (Warren, Mich. / Mott/Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center) reached on an error by the Cavalier catcher.  Junior second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) followed with a two-run single.

Lee (5-11) went the distance in the circle for Wayne State allowing just two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Walsh pitcher Casi Rohr (7-8) allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Fulton, White, Bryce and Lee each had single to account for WSU's four hits.

Wayne State will return to the WSU Softball Stadium for six games this weekend starting at 3 p.m. on Friday with the completion of Sunday's suspended game followed by the regularly scheduled game two of the twinbill.

The Warriors will host Malone on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Ashland on Sunday (noon).  Sunday has also been designated "Senior Day."
