DETROIT -- Wayne State University (25-11, 15-5) won both games with Findlay (14-18, 7-13) on Wednesday afternoon. Game one was the conclusion of an April 10 suspended game. The Warriors won 7-5 in extra innings before cruising to a 16-0 win in game two before lightning forced the game to end early in the top of the eighth inning. WSU has won 12 of its last 13 games and extended its first-place lead in the GLIAC standings.
Game One (W, 7-5 / 9 innings)
In the conclusion of the April 10 suspended game, the scheduled seven innings would not be enough as a five-run ninth inning would power WSU to the 7-5 victory. The Oilers would stage a comeback in the bottom of the ninth with three runs but
Brock Bates (Delta, Ohio / Evergreen) came in to retire the final hitter via the strikeout to collect his first career save.
On April 10, Wayne State started with a run in the first inning, which scored on a wild pitch.
Findlay answered with a run on a throwing error charged to catcher
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) in the first.
The Green & Gold took the lead, 2-1, on a
Kenny Davis (Wyoming, Mich. / Lee) single through the left side in the fourth inning.
However, Findlay would tie the game again with an RBI-single from Victor Migliore into centerfield in its half of the fourth inning.
The Warriors collected two singles in the top of the fifth inning but a line-drive double play off
Eric Cunningham's (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) bat would end the threat.
The game was suspended following the top of the fifth inning due to rain.
When action resumed seven days later at the WSU Baseball Field,
Ethan Vasiliauskas (South Rockwood, Mich. / Carleton Airport) replaced
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) on the mound. Vasiliauskas threw three innings and did not allow a run on one hit and struck out two.
Both teams were held scoreless until the Warriors offense awoke for five runs in the ninth powered by a two-run triple from
Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) and a RBI-double from Cunningham to give WSU a 7-2 lead.
Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) also drove in a run with a single through the left side for his first hit and RBI as a Warrior.
Ruch (2-0) stayed on the mound and collected the first two outs of the inning but not before three runs scored, highlighted by a two-run single from Blake Schmenk. Bates entered to secure the win with a punchout.
Game Two (W, 16-0 / 7 innings)
Following a close game in game one, WSU would attack early and often in the series finale in a 16-0 win. The Warriors erupted in the third inning for its third nine-run inning of the season and put a six-spot on the board in the fourth.
WSU scored its first run in the second inning on an RBI-single from
Daniel Peake (Mississauga, Ont. / Lorne Park).
In the third inning. the Warriors nearly batted through the lineup twice with nine runs on seven hits and two Findlay errors. Wayne State sent 13 hitters to the plate. Guenther highlighted the offensive onslaught with a bases-clearing double to left center.
The line kept moving for WSU in the fourth with six more runs on four hits.
That would be the end of the offense for the day as the two teams remained scoreless over the next three innings until lightning and impending weather forced the game to go final with seven innings in the books.
Jimmy Jackson (Battle Creek, Mich. / Pennfield) collected the win (1-1), going five innings, allowing no runs on just two hits and striking out five Oilers.
Greg Spiess (Saline, Mich.),
David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview) and
Keaton LeBlanc (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) combined for the remaining 2.1 innings.
On the afternoon, Guenther finished 5-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored to increase his average to .398 and take the GLIAC lead in that catergory. Over the past six games, the senior catcher has hit .565 and slugged .783.
Wayne State will stay in Midtown this weekend for three games with Ohio Dominican beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
