Game 2 Final Stats
DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (18-17 overall, 9-6 GLIAC) split a home doubleheader on Friday with Ferris State University (17-11 overall, 9-5 GLIAC). FSU won the completion of last Sunday's suspended game 5-0, before the Warriors rebounded for a 5-0 triumph in the nightcap.
The Bulldogs scored once in the fourth and added four more runs in the sixth to win the opener. Meanwhile, WSU had just one hit off FSU starter Dana Bowler (10-6) over the 5.1 innings on Friday.
Ferris catcher Liz Hamming led off the fourth with a home run down the left field line.
Pinch-hitter Jordan Maxwell led off the top of the sixth with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a bunt single by Alyssa Smith. After Smith stole second base uncontested, Lainee Clay ripped a one-out double over the WSU left fielder's head scoring a pair of runs to make it 3-0. Amy Dunleavy smacked a 1-1 offering over the left field fence to complete the scoring.
Bowler struck out eight and walked three while limiting Wayne State to two hits (one on Sunday and one today).
Warrior starter
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) pitched the first six innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Freshman
Amy Zaranek (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) tossed a scoreless seventh despite allowing two hits but recording one strikeout.
Sophomore
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) and junior
Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) accounted for the two Wayne State hits.
Game two was a different story for Wayne State. Instead of being out-hit 10-2, the Warriors won on the scoreboard (5-0) and also the hit category (10-3).
Junior second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) led off the third with a double down the right field line as the FSU right fielder who made a terrific attempt to try and catch the hit as it was slicing away from her. A sacrifice bunt by junior
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) advanced Fulton to third and she scored as senior
Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) laced an RBI double into the right center ally.
WSU added another run in the fourth as Lee ripped a single past the FSU shortstop into left center field. Lee advanced to second on a passed ball but the next two Warriors struck out. Freshman
Catherine Rayos (Warren, Mich. / Mott/Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center) beat out a bunt single to the pitcher putting runners on the corners. After a walk to Fulton loaded the bases, White singled past the first baseman and beat the second baseman to the bag plating Lee.
In the sixth, freshman
Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) walked on four pitches and Rayos's bunt attempt stopped just in fair territory putting runners at first and second. Two wild pitches during Fulton's at bat scored Williams to make it 3-0. Fulton's sacrifice fly plated Rayos forcing FSU to bring in designated player Dunleavy into the circle. White walked on four pitches and moved to second on a wild pitch. Foreman followed with an RBI single down the left field line to complete the scoring.
WSU starter
Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) was rolling along retiring the first nine Bulldog batters, until Smith led off the fourth with a base hit. Boehler (12-3) set down the next three Ferris hitters to start of stretch of seven consecutive outs until a Warrior error allowed a runner to reach in the sixth.
FSU threatened in the seventh as Clay and Dunleavy singled. After a fly out to left, Hamming hit a pop up in the infield that was called for infield fly but dropped because of the wind. Pinch-runner Brittney Buti advanced to third but pinch-runner Rachael Gabrielson was tagged out in a rundown between first and second to end the game.
Boehler tallied her fifth shutout of the season by facing just 24 Ferris batters retiring 21 and allowing just three hits. She struck out seven.
FSU starter Emily Carlson (0-1) allowed four earned runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Dunleavy pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing one run on one hits with two walks and no strikeouts.
White, Foreman and Rayos each had two hits in the contest. Bryce had one hit to extend her hitting streak to a team-tying best seventh consecutive game.
The Wayne State Warriors will be at home for the next four games with conference doubleheaders on Saturday (1 p.m. vs. Malone) on Sunday (noon vs. Ashland).
