Game 2 Final Stats

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (20-17 overall, 11-6 GLIAC) won both games of Saturday's doubleheader against GLIAC newcomer Malone University (8-22 overall, 2-16 GLIAC) at the WSU Softball Stadium.  The Warriors won the opener 15-0 and defeated the Pioneers 9-1 in the nightcap.

WSU scored four times in the bottom of the first in game one, then batted around scoring nine times in the third.  The Warriors completed its scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

WSU sophomore pitcher Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) allowed four hits and no runs in her four innings of work.  Lee (6-12) struck out 11 and did not walk a batter while facing just 16 Malone hitters.  Senior Emily Wickerham (North Branch, Mich.) struck out two in her scoreless inning of work.

Junior second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) led off the bottom of the first with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior outfielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.).  Senior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) also laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Fulton to third.  Sophomore Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) reached on a throwing error with Fulton scoring the game's first run.  Freshman third baseman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) followed with a single and Lee's line drive shot to left field was misplayed allowing both runners to score.  Junior Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) reached as the MU first baseman dropped a throw and Lee scored all the way from second.

Lee was cruising in the circle for Wayne State striking out nine of the first 11 Pioneer hitters.  After the Warriors scored nine times on 10 hits and two Malone errors in the bottom of the third to make it 3-0, MU threatened in the fourth.  Back-to-back one out singles was followed by Lee's 10th strikeout of the contest.  Marionna Cane singled to load the bases, but Lee escaped with a three pitch strikeout of Heather Papp.

In the fourth, Foreman walked with one out and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by freshman Amy Zaranek ().  It was Zaranek's first collegiate hit.  McGarr followed with a two-run single to right to complete the scoring.

Fulton and McGarr each went 3-for-4 in the game with McGarr accumulating four RBI.  White, Foreman and Lee each had two hits as the Warriors out-hit the Pioneers 18 to four in the game.

Shelby Snyder (4-12) went the distance for Malone allowing 15 runs (11 earned) on 18 hits with one walk and no strikeouts.

Game two started much differently as Malone's Alexa Holztrager homered with two outs in the bottom of the first giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

Wayne State grabbed the lead with a four-run third inning.  Freshman left fielder Catherine Rayos (Warren, Mich. / Mott/Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center) led off with a single, and Fulton followed with a bunt single with Rayos racing all the way to third.  White's fielder's choice loaded the bases.  After a force out at home, Fulton scored on a wild pitch and Bryce walked to re-load the bases.  McGarr laced a three-run triple down the right field line snapping a 1-1 deadlock.

The Warriors scored once in the fourth as Rayos had a one-out single and moved to second as Fulton drew a walk.  Rayos scored WSU's fifth run on White's single up the middle.  After a walk to Foreman loaded the bases, Malone's Amy Donzee retired the next two Wayne State hitters.

WSU scored four times on three hits in the sixth to complete the scoring.  White had an infield hit, stole second and scored when Foreman's grounder went through the legs of the MU shortstop.  A groundout advanced Foreman to second where she scored on a single by McGarr.  Lee then hammered a 1-1 offering over the left center field fence for her second career home run.

Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) went the distance for WSU allowing the one run on five hits in six innings.  Boehler (13-3) struck out six and walked one.  Donze surrendered nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts and five walks.

Wayne State will have its Senior Day tomorrow prior to the noon contest against Ashland.
