Baseball Drops Series Finale with Ohio Dominican

Wayne State's ninth inning comeback falls short, Warriors lose 6-3.

Wayne State University (27-12, 17-6) dropped the series finale on Sunday with Ohio Dominican (16-23, 11-13). Panthers' starter Nick Vendetti (5-3) was solid for the visitors; going six innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out one.

Kenny Davis (Wyoming, Mich. / Grand Rapids CC) began the ninth inning reaching via an error and advanced to second on the poor throw. Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) singled before Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) drove in a run with a single through the left side. However, back-to-back groundouts would end the inning and give the Panthers a 6-3 victory.

For the third time in as many games, ODU scored first in the second inning as Colin Parcher scored from second on a wild pitch as catcher Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / Notre Dame College) was unable to locate the ball behind home plate.

The Panthers added to its lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Bryan Rudolph singled to right field for the RBI.

The Warriors tied the game in the fourth with two runs. The first on a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Jackson (Battle Creek, Mich. / Kalamazoo Valley CC) and the second on a Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) RBI-single to left center.

Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio / Southview) (0-1) replaced starter Kyle Zimmerman to begin the fifth inning and was saddled with the loss as Ohio Dominican scored three runs on five hits to take a 5-2 lead. Zimmerman finished his day with four innings pitched, allowing two earned runs, walking three and striking out three.

The Panthers tacked on a run in the seventh on a Phil Jaskot single to left field.

Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) and Brock Bates (Delta, Ohio / Evergreen) combined for the final 4.1 innings, and Bates did not allow a hit.

Ryan Colegate collected his first save of the season for ODU with three innings of work.

Wayne State will be on the road this week beginning with a doubleheader at Tiffin on Wednesday afternoon.
