University Center, Mich. -- Wayne State University (29-12, 19-6) needed to complete comebacks in both games at Saginaw Valley (11-20, 9-12) on Saturday afternoon to sweep a doubleheader. The Warriors were able to do so with a pair of three-run innings in each game.
WSU collected its seventh win in its last eight games with its game two victory. The Warriors have not lost back-to-back games since March 28 and sit in first place in the GLIAC standings.
Game One (W, 6-3)
Starter
Ethan Vasiliauskas (South Rockwood, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (7-2) went seven innings and struck out seven to collect his seventh victory of the season. The complete game was his second of the season.
A three-run sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie and secured the Wayne State win.
A walk to
Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) and a hit-by-pitch to
Jimmy Jackson (Battle Creek, Mich. / Pennfield) allowed
Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) to drive in the series' first run with a single down the right field line in the second inning.
Kenny Davis (Wyoming, Mich. / Lee) led off the third inning with a single to left field and
Kasey Koster (Portage, Mich. / Central) eventually plated Davis with a sacrifice fly to straightaway center.
The Cardinals' Chris Perkovich delivered a two-out RBI-single down the left field line to cut the deficit in half at 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. SVSU loaded the bases before Michael Craig gave the Cards the 3-2 lead with a two-run single to left.
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) singled and stole second to begin fifth inning.
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) smacked a single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3.
In the fifth inning, Jackson singled and
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) followed with a double. Gebara collected his second RBI-single of the day to put the Warriors ahead, 4-3.
Davis continued the scoring in the sixth with a two-run double down the left field line to extend the Green & Gold's lead to 6-3.
Vasiliauskas tossed perfect fifth and sixth innings.
SVSU collected two singles to begin the bottom of the seventh inning. A strikeout and a sacrifice bunt put SVSU down to its last out. Vasiliauskas picked up his seventh strikeout of the day to end game one.
Game Two (W, 5-3)
Alex Pierse (Clinton Township, Mich. / De La Salle) went five innings and allowed three earned runs and struck out three hitters while earning a no decision in game two.
Both teams were quiet through the first three innings.
Brad Guenther started the fourth inning with his second triple of the season and
Kasey Koster followed with a RBI-single up the middle to give WSU a 1-0 lead.
A leadoff walk and back-to-back singles allowed SVSU to tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the fourth.
A two-run home run from Andy Orr to left center field put SVSU on top 3-1 in the fifth inning.
Kyle Zimmerman followed a
Jimmy Jackson double with an RBI-single to cut SVSU's lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning.
Brock Bates (2-0) replaced Pierse to begin the sixth inning and danced around a two-out double to put up a zero on the scoreboard and keep the Warriors within a run.
Kenny Davis began the seventh inning with a single back up the middle and was replaced for pinch runner

Jeremy Carrell wore his 15th pitch of the season and a sacrifice bunt from Guenther put runners on second and third.
Koster drove in his second run of the game with an RBI-single to right to tie the game before
Eric Cunningham's sacrifice fly put Wayne State ahead, 4-3. Zimmerman delivered with an insurance run with a RBI-single to left field and extend the lead to 5-3.
Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) was summoned from the bullpen and recorded a quick 1-2-3 inning for his GLIAC-leading ninth save of the season.
The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
