Midland, Mich. -- Wayne State (18-10, 9-4) continued its strong play with a Saturday sweep at Northwood (9-13, 4-7). The Warriors won game one 13-7 before shutting out the Timberwolves in game two, 4-0. The Warriors have won six of their last seven contests and are tied for second in the GLIAC standings with Ashland.
Game One (W, 13-7)
Six Warriors drove in runs during game one as Wayne State collected 13 hits and took advantage of five Northwood errors.
WSU struck first with a run in the first inning.
Kenny Davis doubled to begin the frame and advanced to third on a ground out before
Brad Guenther reached on a fielding error charged to the shortstop, allowing Davis to score.
Northwood tied the game in the second on an RBI-double from Seth Szafranski.
Wayne State erupted for nine runs on seven hits in the fourth inning. The inning was prolonged by three Northwood errors. After a fly out to center field, WSU strung together four consecutive hits including a double from
Eric Cunningham.
Cameron Walker drove in a run on a fielder's choice before a single plated Walker. Steve Latos was summoned from the bullpen to replace starter Cody Fenskie (1-2). Fenskie proceeded to drill
Jeremy Carrell and issue a wild pitch. The sixth run of the inning scored on a passed ball.
Kasey Koster doubled home two runs and eventually scored on another passed ball to give WSU a 10-1 lead.
The Timberwolves tallied two runs in its half of the fourth inning. Eric Altman drove in both runs on a single to left field. Wayne State also committed an error in the inning to add to Northwood's momentum.
Chris Gebara singled to begin the fifth inning and Carrell singled him home to give the Warriors an 11-3 advantage.
WSU's starter,
Ethan Vasiliauskas (4-2) was replaced to begin the sixth inning. Vasiliauskas allowed two earned runs and struck out two hitters in his five innings of work.
Alex Kinch gave up a two-run home run to Dustin Lee, making it 11-4 in favor of the visitors.
The Warriors responded with two more runs in the seventh. The first on a Gebara double and the second on a sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter
Mark Lepri.
Jimmy Jackson pitched the seventh inning and walked in a run before allowing another run to score on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. However, Jackson was able to get Cody Rogers to strikeout looking to end the game.
Gebara finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Davis, Carrell and Cunningham all had two hits apiece while Koster led the way with two RBI.
Game Two (W, 4-0)
Alex Pierse (4-1) dropped his ERA to 1.25, which leads the GLIAC, with his third career complete game shutout while striking out seven hitters over his seven innings..
The Timberwolves loaded the bases in the second inning after a walk and two singles but were unable to do any damage as Pierse ended the threat with his first strikeout of the afternoon.
Wayne State took the lead in the fourth with the first runs of the game following RBI singles from Davis and Carrell.
Jake Oard singled with two outs in the fifth inning but was picked off by Guenther at first.
The Warriors doubled its lead in the seventh with a two-run single from
Kyle Zimmerman. Pierse set down the Timberwolves in order in the seventh including the last two via the strikeout to give the Warriors the 4-0 win.
Gebara collected another three-hit game to finish the day, 6-for-8.
Wayne State baseball will go for its second GLIAC sweep of the season play on Sunday against Northwood at noon.
