DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (16-14 overall, 7-3 GLIAC) earned a conference split Sunday afternoon against visiting Ohio Dominican University (13-20-1 overall, 9-3 GLIAC).  The Warriors dropped the opener 1-0 in eight innings but rebounded for a 10-0 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, each team had six hits with WSU sophomore hurler Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) striking out a career-high 13 batters, eclipsing her previous best of 10 set earlier this season against Notre Dame College.

Each team also left seven runners on base in the contest.

The Panthers had a runner at third with two outs in each of the first two innings but Lee was up to the task recording a strikeout to end the frame.  The Warriors had a chance to score in the bottom of the first with back-to-back two outs by senior Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) and sophomore Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) but both runners were left stranded.

Junior Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) had a two-out triple in the third, the first three-bagger for WSU on the season, but the next batter grounded out.

ODU had a leadoff double in the fourth but the next three hitters went down, including the first two on strikes.

White had a leadoff single in the sixth, was sacrificed to second by Foreman and stole third with two outs but the Warriors were unable to get a key two-out hit.

In the top of the eighth, Lizzy Weber lined the first pitch of the inning to right for a base hit.  After a failed bunt attempt, Weber advanced to second on a passed ball.  WSU nearly turned a double play as Alex Cribari's looping liner was caught at short by Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) and her toss to second base nearly caught Weber.  Kelsey Albanese lined an 0-1 offering over Williams head into left center scoring Weber.

Foreman had a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth, but Wayne State finished 1-for-10 with runners on base.

Lee (4-10) allowed just the one unearned run on six hits with four walks.  Rachel Stanzel improved to 9-11 by tossing the shutout.

White and Foreman each had two hits in the contest.

In the second game, the Warrior offense scored times in both the first and third innings to support the shutout pitching of freshman Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley).  Boehler (11-2) limited the Panthers to three hits, while recording three strikeouts and one walk.

In the top of the first, WSU had three hits - an infield single by White, an RBI single by Bryce and an RBI double by freshman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) - with McGarr later scoring on a passed ball.

Bryce had a one-out single in the third and scored as McGarr laced a triple down the right field line.  Lee was hit by a pitch, and with two outs, junior Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) smacked a two-run double to left center.

White scored again in the fourth as she walked with one out, went to third on a base hit by Foreman and scored on Bryce's sacrifice fly.

Wayne State completed the scoring with three runs in the top of the seventh.  Bryce had a leadoff single, but was caught stealing.  McGarr followed with a perfectly placed bloop single over second base.  After a fielder's choice, pinch-hitter Ashley Dunford (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) worked a walk then Burnard ripped another two-run double to left center.  Williams added an RBI single plating Burnard.

WSU went 7-for-17 with runners on base in the nightcap.

Brandis Fishel (4-9) was tagged with the loss after surrendering 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits with three walks and no strikeouts.

Bryce and McGarr each had three hits and two RBI in the game, while Burnard had four RBI.

Wayne State will visit Findlay on Wednesday for a league doubleheader before returning home to host Grand Valley on Saturday (1:07 - Xfinity channel 900) and Ferris State on Sunday.
