Zimmerman’s Record Day Powers Warriors in Rout

Wayne State beat Urbana 19-8 on Tuesday.

Wayne State (20-10, 10-4) took a brief vacation from GLIAC play to hand Urbana (15-12, 4-4 GMAC) a 19-8 defeat on Tuesday afternoon. Kyle Zimmerman drove in eight runs on a grand slam and a three-run home run while also scoring three runs.
 
The RBI total from Zimmerman is a program record and the most since John Skaggs and Ryan LaPensse both drove in six runs in separate games in 2010. The Warriors also hit a program record six home runs in the game.
 
In the past ten games, WSU has outscored its opponents 93 to 42 for an average of 9.3 runs per game. The Warriors have won seven straight.
 
The Green & Gold began the contest with an eight-run inning on six hits in the first including a leadoff home run from Kenny Davis and Zimmerman's bases-loaded blast. The Blue Knight's starter, Brad Hall (0-1) lasted just 0.2 of an inning. Mark Lepri also hit his first career home run in the first inning.
 
The Warriors scored two more in the second on four hits. Zimmerman singled to left for the first run of the frame and Chris Gebara followed with an RBI single.
 
Urbana scored five runs in their half of the second inning including a three-run triple from Robert Tavone, Jr.
 
Jimmy Jackson started the fourth with a solo home run. Lepri drove in a run with a single to left field and Jeremy Carrell collected an RBI on an infield single. The inning's fourth run came on a throwing error.
 
Zimmerman's three-run home run came in the fifth to give WSU a 17-6 lead.
 
Urbana added runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
 
The Warriors put up two more runs in the eighth on a two-run home run from Brad Guenther.
 
Greg Spiess (2-2) picked up the win, going 6.0 innings and striking out seven hitters. Keaton LeBlanc and Kirk Stambaugh combined for the final three innings. Stambaugh struck out two in his two scoreless innings.
 
Wayne State will continue their Ohio swing with a doubleheader at Findlay tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m.
