Tiffin, Ohio -- Wayne State University (30-14, 20-8) split Wednesday's doubleheader at Tiffin (19-27, 13-17).
Wayne State reached the 30-win plateau for the seventh time in program history and the fifth time in the past six seasons. The Warriors had not lost back-to-back games since March 28 until Tiffin took game one, 5-4, powered by a five-run third inning.
The Green & Gold avoided its first three-game losing streak of the season with a pair of five-run innings in game two on its way to an 11-5 win.
Kenny Davis (Wyoming, Mich. / Lee) extended his hitting streak to 18 games and collected five hits during the doubleheader.
Game One (L, 5-4)
Jimmy Jackson (Battle Creek, Mich. / Pennfield) (1-2) started his second game of the season on Wednesday and lasted just four innings and allowed five runs (two earned) while striking out five.
Tiffin struck first in the bottom of the third inning with five runs on five hits and a Wayne State error. Ryan Williams delivered a two-run double down the right field line before Nick Hueneburg tripled home two more runs to give the Dragons a 5-0 lead.
Davis and
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) started the fourth inning with back-to-back singles.
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) reached via an error, allowing Davis to score the Warriors' first run of the afternoon; and then stole his 11th base of the season.
Kasey Koster (Portage, Mich. / Central) continued the fourth inning rally with a two-run double to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Dragons threatened again in the bottom of the fourth inning with two singles. However, as KC Weber stole second and Colin Sallee attempted to sneak home but was thrown out by Carrell at the plate.
Davis doubled to begin the fifth inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Carrell. Davis scored on a wild pitch to pull the Warriors within a run, 5-4.
Jackson moved to the designated hitter spot as
Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) came in from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the fifth and tossed a scoreless frame.
Wayne State had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded but were unable to plate any runs.
The Warriors went down quietly in the seventh inning as Tiffin collected the 5-4 victory.
Logan Sendelbach (2-1) went 5.1 innings allowing three earned runs for the win and Davis Blalock picked up his first save of the season, going 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit.
Game Two (W, 11-5)
Brandyn Hall (Sylvania, Ohio / Northview) (3-2) went four innings and allowed three earned runs in a winning effort.
The first eight hitters of the game reached base for WSU. Davis began game two with a leadoff home run to left field to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Carrell singled before Guenther doubled down the right field line. Koster extended the Warriors' lead to 3-0 with a two-run single through the right side.
Brent Faber replaced Tyler Glass (1-2) with no outs in the first.
The line continued to move as
Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) and
Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) collected back-to-back RBI singles to stretch the lead to 5-0. A double play ended the inning and limited the damage to just five runs.
Carrell was hit by a pitch to begin the second inning, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Guenther singled through the right side for an RBI.
The Dragons scored a run on three hits in the bottom of the second inning.
Tiffin loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning following an error, a single and a walk. Williams singled through the left side for two runs, to make it 6-3.
Brock Bates (Delta, Ohio / Evergreen) replaced Hall following the two-run single.
Hueneburg delivered a sacrifice fly to right field for an RBI and brought the Dragons within two runs. Garret Vernau kept the comeback alive with a RBI-single through the left side to cut the WSU lead to 6-5.
The Warriors answered with a run in the sixth on a sacrifice bunt RBI from Carrell. Koster extended lead to 8-5 with a single through the left side and Jackson broke the game open, 9-5, with a RBI-double to left field.
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) drove in the Warriors' 10th run of the game with sacrifice fly to center field and Gebara doubled home another run to give WSU an 11-5 advantage.
Ethan Vasiliauskas (South Rockwood, Mich. / Carleton Airport) entered in relief for the second time this season to begin the bottom of the sixth and did not allow a run.
David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview) retired the final three batters for the victory.
The Warriors will be back in action at home on Saturday with a doubleheader with Grand Valley at 1 p.m.
