Indianapolis, Ind. -- The 2013 Wayne State University softball season came to an end Saturday afternoon with a 9-1 loss to Ashland University (28-19 overall) on the second day of the 2013 NCAA Midwest Regional tournament.  The Warriors finish the campaign with a 30-22 mark.

Both teams had a chance to score in the second inning.  WSU sophomore Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) had a leadoff double to right center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman third baseman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic).  However, two hard hit grounders ended the frame.

Ashland had a single and fielder's choice to put two on with one out, but Warrior starting pitcher Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) recorded a strikeout and a line out to end the threat.

WSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a two-out solo home run to center field by junior second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.), her third round-tripper of year.

The Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.  Jerrica Young had a leadoff double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.  Jen Moore followed with a home run to left field.

McGarr had a two-out second in the fourth and went to second as the throw from the outfield was mishandled.  Lee lined a single into left but McGarr was thrown out at the plate.

A four-pitch walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI double by Tawna Garver made it 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth.  Following a strike out, Young smashed a two-run home run to center increasing the AU lead to 5-1.  After a single, freshman hurler Mackenzie Boehler () replaced Lee in the circle.  Moore walked on five pitches and Courtney Yarall drilled a three-run shot to left.

Freshman shortstop Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) had a one-out single in the fifth but was erased on a double play ball.

A single, sacrifice bunt and another single ended the game.

WSU junior center fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) had her 20-game on-base streak come to an end following a ground out and a line out.

Lee (12-15) allowed six earned runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and two walks.  Boehler pitched one inning surrendering three runs (two earned) on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Amber McDermott (12-6) went the distance for AU allowing one earned run on five hits in five innings with no strikeouts or walks.

Wayne State loses just three seniors to graduation - Stephanie Foreman, Emily Wickerham and Makelle Barski - and will return three players (Lyndsay Butler, Shannon Hilton and Shelby Spano) who received medical redshirts for 2013.
