GLIAC Tournament Second Round Boxscore
Findlay, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball team (25-20 overall) defeated Tiffin University (22-26 overall) 3-1 in an elimination game Saturday afternoon at the Marathon Diamonds as part of the 2013 GLIAC Tournament.
The Warriors grabbed an early 1-0 lead as senior right fielder
Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) walloped her third home run of the season on an 0-2 offering with two outs in the bottom of the first off Dragon starter Amber Young (10-9).
WSU extended its lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. Junior second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) drew a one-out walk, and with two outs Foreman delivered a single advancing junior center fielder
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) to second. Sophomore catcher
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) then laced the first pitch down the left field line scoring both White and Foreman.
Meanwhile, WSU freshman hurler
Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) had retired 10 of the first 12 Tiffin hitters, allowing just two walks. A one-out single in the fourth was followed by back-to-back pop outs to end the frame.
TU's Emily Shaw led off the fifth with a single and moved to second on a one-out single by Katie Toomey. After an infield fly, Shaw scored an unearned run on a Warrior error. With runners on the corners and two outs, Boehler retired Caitlin Houk on a fly out to center.
The Dragons threatened in the sixth as Payton Denman had a leadoff double to deep left center. Cassandra Brown popped up a bunt attempt and Jena King followed with a single again putting runners on the corners. Shaw hit a grounder to first and when Warrior
Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) went to tag her, Shaw backed up forcing a deadball situation which resulted in King returning to first base after a lengthy discussion by the umpires. Pinch-hitter Lesy Herbert fouled out to the catcher to end the inning.
TU's second batter in the seventh reached on an error, but Wayne State ended the game with a double play as Brianna Gamm popped up to first on an apparent hit-and-run with Kristin Prokopakis being doubled off first.
Boehler (15-4) limited the Dragons to one unearned run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Young allowed three earned runs on six hits in her four innings in the circle with two walks and no strikeouts. Kelsey Yaratch held WSU to one hit in her two innings of work.
Foreman and sophomore designated player
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) each had two hits for the Warriors, who out-hit Tiffin 7-5 in the contest.
Wayne State will play Ohio Dominican at 10 a.m. on Saturday in another elimination game. The winner will play the winner of the other loser's bracket contest between Ferris State and Findlay.
