GLIAC Tournament First Round Boxscore
Findlay, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball team (24-20 overall) suffered a 5-4 setback in eight innings against Ashland (26-16 overall), the third seeded team in this weekend's GLIAC tournament.
The Warriors left 10 runners on base including three innings in which the final out was recorded with the bases loaded.
Junior centerfielder
Logan White went 3-for-5 and made a spectacular catch on a deep drive in the bottom of the sixth which would have easily plated the go-ahead run.
Senior right fielder
Stephanie Foreman went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt, while freshman third baseman
Jade McGarr and pitcher
Briana Lee each went 2-for-4.
Lee and junior second baseman
Nikki Fulton each had an RBI for the Warriors.
Lee (8-14) took the loss allowing five runs (four earned) on 13 hits in 7.2 innings. She struck out three and walked two.
Amber McDermott went the distance in the circle for the Eagles surrendering four runs (two earned) on 12 hits. She did not record a walk or a strikeout.
After Ashland scored once in the bottom of the first on two hits and a pair of WSU miscues, the Warriors erupted three runs in the top of the second. Junior catcher
Amanda Burnard reached on an error, and was safe at second on another Ashland error of the bat of freshman shortstop
Gabby Williams. Freshman left fielder
Catherine Rayos was safe on a throwing error with both Burnard and Williams scoring as the errant throw went deep down the right field line. Rayos made it 3-1 as she scored on a single by Fulton.
The Eagles regained the lead, 4-3, with a trio of runs in the fourth. The last two came on a two-out two-run shot to right field by Jerrica Young.
The Warriors knotted the score at four with a single run in the fifth. Sophomore first baseman
Emily Bryce led off the frame with a double to right center. She advanced to third on a single up the middle by McGarr and scored on a Lee's single to left.
Neither team would score for the next six combined half-innings, until the bottom of the eighth. Carly West beat out a slow bouncer down the first base line and was sacrificed to second by Tawna Garver. Jamie Weber's infield single put runners on the corners. After Young was intentionally walked, Burnard made a terrific pick at home on a bounced throw force out for the second out of the frame. Jen Moore then blooped an 0-1 offering into left centerfield scoring the winning run.
Wayne State will be playing Tiffin in an elimination game starting around 2:50 p.m.
