DETROIT -- Wayne State University (31-15, 21-9) and Grand Valley State (27-17, 21-7) split on Saturday with GVSU taking game one, 3-1. The Warriors responded with a 1-0 victory in game two in eight innings powered by a gem from
Alex Pierse (Clinton Township, Mich. / De La Salle) (7-1) and a walkoff RBI-bunt single from
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.). The Lakers clinched the regular season title with the game one victory.
Game One (L, 3-1)
Ethan Vasiliauskas (South Rockwood, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (7-3) was forced to pitch in traffic from the very beginning of game one. The Lakers left five runners on base in the first two innings. Vasiliauskas was saddled with the loss going six innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out two while walking four.
GVSU eventually broke through in the top of the third inning with a run on a sacrifice fly from Jamie Potts.
WSU answered with a run im the bottom of the third as Chirs Gebara (Troy, Mich.) scored on a wild pitch, which required a nifty slide from the Warrior outfielder to avoid the tag.
GVSU touched up Vasiliauskas in the sixth inning for a run to take a 2-1 lead. The run crossed on a throwing error on a double play attempt from the WSU middle infield. The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Giancarlo Brugnoni flew out to deep center field for a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 3-1.
Kyle Zimmerman (Frakfort, Mich.) reached via an error with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and advanced to second on a balk.
Travis Rodery (Wyandotte, Mich / Roosevelt) kept the inning going with a single through the right side but the next two hitters were retired to end the game.
Taylor Horn tossed the final inning for WSU and did not allow a baserunner.
Kyle Teague (6-1) went 5.2 innings for the win and allowed just one earned run on one hit before Brad Zambron picked up his GLIAC-leading 11th save of the season.
Game Two (W, 1-0, 8 inn.)

Alex Pierse went all eight innings for the extra-inning victory and did not allow a run on five hits with two strikeouts for his third complete game shutout of the season.
The game moved quickly throught the first six inning as both teams combined for just five hits as Pierse and Anthony Campanella (6-4) went toe-to-toe in a electric pitcher's dual.
Kasey Koster (Portage, Mich. / Central) doubled to left center to begin the bottom of the seventh inning.
Hank Van Ooyen (Hudsonville, Mich.) was called upon to pinch run for Koster. A strikeout and a 4-6-3 double play would end the threat.
Pierse navigated the eighth without any damage to give the Green & Gold a chance to win it in the bottom of the eight and that is just was happened.
Gebara singled through the left side to begin the frame and Rodery layed down a sacrifice bunt to move Gebara into scoring position.
Kenny Davis (Wyoming, Mich. / Lee) singled into left field to put runners on the corners with one out. Carrell dropped down a squeeze bunt single that hugged the foul line the entire way to give Wayne State a 1-0 victory as Gebara was off on the pitch.
Davis and Gebara both collected two hits in game two. Davis' 18-game hitting streak came to an end in game one.
Campanella went 7.1 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits, while striking out four and walking two.
The two teams will conclude the regular season tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for noon. The seven WSU seniors will be honored prior to the game.
