DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team picked up six straight-set victories in singles Friday and defeated Hillsdale College in its season-opener, 8-1. It's the eighth straight season that the Warriors have led the season off with a win.
Wayne State (1-0) took a 2-1 lead over the Chargers (0-1) after three, contested doubles matches.
The WSU No. 2 doubles team of
Anastasia Burobina and
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) won 8-3. The victory for Burobina was her first as a Warrior. The No. 1 doubles team of
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) and
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) won in a tie-breaker over Hillsdale's Morgan Delp and Sydney Delp, 9-8 (7-5).
Hillsdale's lone point came at No. 3 doubles as the team of Rachel Blaauw and Dana Grace Buck won 8-6.
WSU swept the singles flights with each player winning in straight sets. Briand won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and
Yahsha Moore followed at the No. 1 flight with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Poissant was victorious at No. 6 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0. Burobina picked up her first singles win in a WSU uniform, winning at No. 4 singles in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) added a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles and freshman
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) recorded her first WSU victory with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the No. 3 flight.
Wayne State hits the road for four straight matches, beginning with a 3 p.m. Monday match at Findlay.
