Volleyball Drops Five-Setter Against Maryville

Emily Norscia finished the Crossover with 57 kills (4.38/set).

AURORA, Ill. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (6-12, 3-8 GLIAC) concluded the weekend with a five-set loss to Maryville (13-8, 5-6 GLVC) inside the Great Lakes Center on Saturday. The Warriors took set one 25-21 before the Saints took a marathon set-two 30-28. The Warriors took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-22 set-three victory but Maryville took set four 26-24 and set five 15-12.

The GLVC won its fifth straight Crossover 37-11. Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) was named to the All-Tournament Team after leading the team with 57 kills (4.38 set) and a .297 hitting percentage.

Maryville led 8-2 to begin the first set. WSU would tie the set at 13-13 after a 4-0 run capped by a Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) kill.The Warriors would not lead until a Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) kill put WSU on top 22-21. WSU took the final six points of the set to win the set 25-21.

Hannha Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) gave the Warriors a 7-5 advantage on a kill in the second set. The WSU lead was extended to 16-12 on a MU attack error. WSU led 27-26 late in the set but Maryville would collect back-to-back points to win 30-28 and tie the match at 1-1.

Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) gave the Warriors a 15-10 lead in set three but the Saints took the next seven points to take a 17-15 lead. The Green & Gold regained the lead at 23-20 on a MU attack error and would win the set 25-22.

Maryville started quickly in the fourth set and led 14-7. WSU would come back and tie the set at 23-23 but it would be too little too late as the Saints forced a fifth set with a 26-24 set-four win.

Maryville led 11-8 in the fifth set. The game remained tied at 11-11 and 12-12 but the Saints would take the final three points to secure the match victory.

Four Warriors finished with double-digit kills led by Norscia's career-high 24. Guldan dished out a season-high 59 assists.

WSU returns home to meet Northwood on Friday at 7 PM.
