YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team concluded its three-game exhibition slate with a 98-95 double overtime setback at Eastern Michigan University Monday evening.
The Warriors led three times in the early going on but by only two points each time at 2-0, 4-2, and 6-4. The Eagles went on a 14-4 run to open up an eight-point advantage at 18-10 just over six minutes into the contest.
WSU pulled within four at 27-23 at the 9:17 mark after a pair of free throws by
Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich). EMU answered with a 15-0 run over the next four minutes as the Warriors went 0-for-4 from the floor and had four turnovers. Trailing 42-23, Wayne State finished the opening 20 minutes on a 15-9 run to cut the deficit to 13 (51-38). Lavita-Stephens had six points,
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) added five and
Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) contributed four points.
A 9-1 run by the Warriors to start the second half made it a five-point game at 52-47 following a lay-up by Brown. EMU responded with a 12-4 spurt to push its lead to 13 (64-51) with 13:28 remaining in the second half. WSU kept chipping away and was within three (70-67) after another Brown bucket at the 7:52 mark.
There were five lead changes and four ties in the final four minutes of regulation as Wayne State ended regulation on a 12-7 run over the final 7:32 to knot the game at 79.
WSU scored the first four points of the first extra session on a pair of free throws by Brown and a jumper by
McKenzie Kudron (New Boston, Mich. / Huron). The game was tied at 83 and 86, after two free throws by Brown with two seconds left.
In the second overtime period, the host Eagles scored the first six points as WSU's offense had two missed field goals, a turnover and missing the first free throw followed by a lane violation. Finally, Hughes scored on a jumper but EMU scored the next four points for a 96-88 lead with 1:25 left. A triple by
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King), preceded a lay-up by
Amber McCann (Southfield, Mich. / Southfield-Lathrup) to pull the Warriors within three at 96-93. A lay-up by EMU's Janay Morton was answered by a lay-up from Hughes to complete the scoring.
After going 12-for-12 from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes, the Warriors were just 12-of-19 over the final 30 minutes.
Brown had a monster game with 37 points, 30 rebounds (including 14 on the offensive end), five assists and five blocked shots. Hughes finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Lavita-Stephens contributed 15 points.
Jamaica Bucknor and Morton each scored 25 points for EMU, while Cha Sweeney added 22 points, seven steals and six assists.
Wayne State will begin regular-season play this Friday at home vs. Indianpolis. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
