Women's Basketball Defeats Michigan-Dearborn 107-35

Brown and McCann each record double-doubles.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team improved to 2-0 overall with a 107-35 home court victory over Michigan-Dearborn (2-4 overall) Tuesday night at the Matthaei.

The Warriors started the scoring just seconds into the contest controlling the opening tip followed by a fast-break lay-up by junior Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) off a feed from sophomore Gabby Machado (Pontiac, Mich. / Northern).  The Wolverines knotted the game at two on a jumper by Andrea Collins, before a pair of free throws by senior Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) started a 14-1 run to open a 13-point margin at 16-3.

After UMD cut its deficit to 11 (18-7), WSU went on a 23-4 spurt over the next 7:30 to put the game out of reach at 41-13.

Wayne State led at halftime 57-20 based on a 48-8 edge in points in the paint.  Senior Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) had 14 points in the first 20 minutes, while Brown contributed 10 points and six rebounds with senior Amber McCann (Southfield, Mich. / Southfield-Lathrup) chipping in with 10 rebounds and seven points.  The Warriors shot 58 percent (25-of-43) in the first half compared to 24 percent (7-of-29) for the Wolverines.  WSU had 11 offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points to UMD's 11 defensive rebounds.  Jalissa Williams led UM-Dearborn with nine points at the break.

The Warriors scored the first 11 points of the second half and cruised from there to their biggest scoring output since a 132-13 win over Temple Baptist on Dec. 29, 2007.

Brown finished with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds for her 49th career double-double.  McCann totaled a game-best 15 rebounds and tallied 13 points for her first career double-double.  Hughes contributed 21 points and five boards, while Machado recorded 15 points and eight rebounds.  Junior Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) added 10 points, with senior Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) chipping in with nine points, eight assists and seven rebounds, along with a game-high four steals.

Collins led UMD with 14 points, while Williams added nine points and a team-best seven rebounds.

WSU shot 60 percent (47-of-78) from the floor, while limiting the Wolverines to 22 percent (12-of-55).

The Warriors will be idle until beginning conference play at home on Thursday, Dec. 4 vs. Lake Superior State at 5:30 p.m.  The Lakers are led by first-year head coach Kristen Rogers, a four-year letterwinner (2002-06) for WSU and a former assistant coach.
