DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team won its second consecutive exhibition contest posting a 94-52 victory over visiting Lawrence Tech Tuesday night at the Matthaei.
The Blue Devils scored on their opening possession as Alex Ruster made a jumper, but the Warriors answered with a lay-up and a triple from junior
Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich), before senior
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) scored on a steal and fast break lay-up. Maegan Branahm made a three-pointer cutting the WSU advantage to 7-5. Wayne State responded with a 10-0 run as four different Warriors scored during the stretch.
Following a triple by LTU's Allison Bicknell pulled the visitors within nine (19-10), WSU had a 13-5 run that concluded with a triple from Brown to make it 33-15 with 6:23 left before intermission. After a three-pointer by Ruster, Wayne State finished the opening 20 minutes out-scoring the guests 18-12 for a 51-30 lead at the break.
Brown had 22 points, five rebounds and three steals while playing 14 minutes in the opening half. Branham and Bicknell each scored nine points in the first 20 minutes for the Blue Devils.
The teams exchanged buckets in the early part of the second half, prior to the Warriors going on a 17-9 run over a six minute span to open up a 29-point margin at 72-43.
Brown finished with 35 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots in 27 minutes. Senior
Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) contributed 20 points and five assists, while senior
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) added five assists and four steals. Senior
Amber McCann (Southfield, Mich. / Southfield-Lathrup) tallied six points and seven rebounds off the bench, with graduate student
McKenzie Kudron (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) totaling seven points and six rebounds.
Barnham led three Blue Devils in double figures with 13 points. Jazmine Brown had 10 points along with a team-best eight rebounds.
Wayne State will conclude exhibition play on Monday with a 7 p.m. tip-off at Eastern Michigan.
