Rosemont, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball team (6-1 overall) began the 2014 Lewis Indoor Tournament at The Dome at the Ballpark with a 4-1 extra inning triumph over Upper Iowa (1-8 overall) Saturday morning.

The Peacocks scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third.  After a walk and single put runners on the corners with no outs, a line drive double play erased the lead runner.  A stolen base preceded a WSU error which again put runners at first and third. Jacqueline Flood followed with a two-out single plating the game's first run.

The Warriors would tie the game in the top of the fifth.  Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) had a leadoff single and continued to second on an outfield error by UIU.  Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Burnard to third.  Following a  ground out, Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) delivered the game-tying single.

In the top of the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule going into effect, Hentschel was placed on second.  Ali Lince (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) reached on a throwing error putting runners at first and third.  White's single scored Hentschel with the go-ahead run.  A ground out moved both runners up, with Lince scoring when Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) reached on an error.  Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova College) followed with an RBI single scoring White.

Warrior hurler Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) improved to 3-0 by retiring all three Peacock batters in the bottom of the eighth.  She finished the contest with 10 strikeouts to one walk and allowed just an unearned run on three hits.

Flood started in the circle for UIU and left after 6.1 innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits.  Brooke Remond (1-4) took the loss in relief.

White and Burnard each had three hits for WSU, while Ingratta recorded the other two hits.

WSU will play Lewis later on Saturday.
