Rosemont, Ill. -- The 17th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (9-1 overall) completed play at the 2014 Lewis Indoor Tournament at The Dome at the Ballpark with a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside (0-3 overall).

WSU junior pitcher Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) tossed a two-hit shutout allowing just four base runners, while also starting the winning rally in the bottom of the seventh.  Lee allowed a two-out walk in the first, but struck out the next batter on three pitches to begin a string of retiring 12 consecutive Ranger hitters.

With two outs in the fifth, Carly Dundee worked a seven-pitch walk and Samantha Magruder followed with a single on an 0-2 offering, but Lee responded with three consecutive strike pitches to end the frame.

UWP's Kalli Gosser, who had walked in the first, had a two-out single in the sixth.  Lee struck out all three Parkside hitters in the seventh.

The Warriors had seven hits off starter Hayley Schneider (4 innings) and Dundee (2.2 innings).  Junior Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) had two hits and reached third base both teams but could not score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lee reached on an error and pinch-runner Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Ali Lince (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview).  Senior Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) followed with a single and took second on the throw eliminating a double play possibility.

Pinch-hitter Emily Cava (Oakville, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.) grounded out to second but Fulton was able to score the winning run.

Lee finished the contest with 15 strikeouts to two walks, while allowing just two singles.  She faced only 25 batters in the game.

Schneider limited the Warriors to four hits in her four innings of work with no walks and one strikeout.  Dundee was the hard-luck loser allowing an unearned run in the seventh.  She gave up three hits with no strikeouts and no walks.

Wayne State is scheduled to play next weekend (March 1-2) at the USI Spring Classic in Evansville, Ind.  However, the tournament scheduled for this weekend (Feb. 22-23) in Evansville was canceled.

Should the Warriors take the field next weekend, they will face four GLVC opponents in Saint Joseph's (Saturday at 1 pm), Southern Indiana (Saturday at 3 pm), Wisconsin-Parkside (Sunday at 10 am) and Missouri S&T (Sunday at noon).
