Rosemont, Ill. -- The 17th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (8-1 overall) recorded a 1-0 triumph Sunday morning over No. 35-Winona State (4-1 overall) to start day two of the 2014 Lewis Indoor Tournament at The Dome at the Ballpark.

The Winona State Warriors had a chance to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a one-out triple by Reed Karsten but she was tagged out at the plate trying to score when a pitch got away from Wayne State backstop Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams).  The next batter for Winona, pitcher Ashley Walker (1-1), singled but was stranded when Wayne State Warrior pitcher Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) recorded her second of 12 strikeouts in the contest.

In the bottom of the inning, freshman designated player Emily Cava (Oakville, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.) led off with a single to right center.  Senior outfielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) then drew a walk on a 3-1 offering.  Following an out, Bryce delivered an RBI single to center field.  A ground out double play ended the frame.

Over the last six innings for Butler, she allowed a hit in five of the six innings with only one runner, Jenny Nelson, reaching third base.  Nelson had a leadoff triple in the top of the fourth but was thrown out at the plate.

Wayne State managed just two hits off Walker the rest of the game, both via bunts by White in the third and by Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) in the fifth.

Butler improved to 5-0 with the win and finished with 12 strikeouts to no walks, while notching her third shutout of the year.

Walker allowed just the one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Wayne State will conclude the 2014 Lewis Indoor Tournament with a contest against in-region foe Wisconsin-Parkside later on Sunday.
