Softball Finishes Day One With 2-0 Triumph Over Union

Lee tosses two-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts.

Box Score Huntsville, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (2-0 overall) concluded the opening day of the 2014 Charger Chillout hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville with a 2-0 victory over Union University (1-1) from Jackson, Tenn.

Junior pitcher Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) limited the 2013 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) national softball champions to two hits and four base runners in her seven innings in the circle.  She struck out 14 while allowing a one-out double in the first and a one-out single in the sixth.

The other two Bulldog runners to reach base were via a leadoff walk in the second (but Lee struck out the next three batters on 12 pitches) and a strikeout passed ball on the leadoff batter in the seventh, but Lee preserved the shutout with a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a pop out to her on an 0-2 offering.

Meanwhile, UU starting pitcher Kelly Robey held the Warriors scoreless for the first four innings despite WSU having at least one base runner in every frame.  Senior second baseman Julie Ingratta () led off the game with a single, and sophomore third baseman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) led off the second with a triple to right center but the next three Wayne State hitters went down on strikes.  Senior left fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) had a two-out infield single in third and freshman designated player Emily Cava (Oakville, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.) drew a full count walk with two outs in the fourth.

Ingratta reached on an error with one out in the fifth and moved to second on a single to left center by White, her second of three hits in the contest.  Following a strikeout, junior first baseman Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) delivered an RBI single to left scoring pinch-runner Catherine Rayos (Warren, Mich. / Mott) with the game's first run.

Lee and Cava had back-to-back singles leading off the sixth, but the next Warriors were retired.

In the top of the seventh, White had her third straight hit and redshirt freshman Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) followed with a bunt single.  Bryce advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and McGarr drove in White with a ground out.

White recorded three of Wayne State's nine hits, while no other Warrior had more than one hit.

WSU will play two in-regional games on Saturday Noon Central contest against Maryville followed by a 4 p.m. Central game vs. Saint Joseph's.
