Softball Improves To 3-1 With 5-1 Victory Over Saint Joseph's

McGarr records three hits and three RBI.

Box Score Huntsville, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (3-1 overall) completed day two of the 2014 Charger Chillout with a 5-1 regional victory over Saint Joseph's (1-3 overall).

After failing to score in the bottom of the first despite three consecutive two-out singles by Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.), Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) and Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova College), the Warriors tallied two runs in the bottom of the second.

Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) had a two-out single and moved to second on the throw.  She advanced to third on an illegal pitch, then scored on a double by Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic).  Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) followed with her own RBI double.

Meanwhile, Butler retired 12 of the next 14 Puma batters keeping the Warriors ahead 2-0 moving to the bottom of the sixth.

Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont. / Galt C.I.) started the frame with a bunt single and pinch-hitter Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) followed with a walk against an SJC reliever.  Williams advanced both runners with a sacrifce bunt and McGarr proceeded to rip a two-run double to centerfield.  White's sacrifice fly plated McGarr with Wayne State's fifth run.

Saint Joseph's scored its only run following a one-out WSU error, and a two-out double in the seventh.

McGarr had three hits, two doubles and three RBI along with two runs scored.  Butler and Ingratta each contributed two hits to the 11-hit Warrior attack.

Butler improved to 2-0 on the season by recording six strikeouts and no walks and just an unearned run in her seven innings in the circle.

Wayne State will conclude play at the 2014 Charger Chillout on Sunday with contests against North Alabama and No. 15-ranked North Georgia.
