Box Score Huntsville, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball team (5-1 overall) concluded opening week play with a 2-1 triumph over No. 15-North Georgia (6-3) on Sunday on the final day of the 2014 Charger Chillout hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
Redshirt freshman
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) pitched and hit the Warriors to the victory. In the circle, she struck out eight of the 25 batters she faced while allowing just one run on four hits with no walks. In the batters box, Butler went 2-for-3.
The Saints scored their only run in the top of the first as leadoff hitter Taylor Anne Merritt had an infield single, stole second and scored as the next batter Kim MacMillan hit a single through the left side.
Butler then retired 10 in a row until a one-out single in the fourth by Jessica Finch. She then proceeded to set down seven straight UNG hitters until a two-out single in the sixth by Sarah Johnson. Butler finished off the contest by retiring the final four North Georgia batters.
The WSU offense knotted the game at one in the bottom of the second as
Catherine Rayos (Warren, Mich. / Mott/MMSTC) had a two-out bunt single, advanced to second on a single up the middle by
Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth), then scored the tying run on a single to left by
Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic).
Ali Lince (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford). After a pop out, Burnard laced a two-out single to right center scoring Lince with the tie-breaking run.
Butler and Burnard each had two hits as the Warriors out-hit the Saints 7-4.
After taking the upcoming weekend off, WSU will play four games at the Lewis Indoor Tournament on Feb. 22-23 at "The Dome at the Ballpark" in Rosemont, Ill.
