Bryce drives in three.

Box Score Huntsville, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball team improved to 4-1 on the young season by recording a 6-2 victory over North Alabama to start the final day of the 2014 Charger Chillout hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

Warrior starting pitcher Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) and Lions hurler BreeAnna Blevins (2-3) were locked in a scoreless pitchers duel through three innings.

Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) tripled to right field leading off the top of the fourth and scored on a ground out by Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams).  UNA answered wtih a leadoff home run by Chelsea Showers in the bottom of the frame.

WSU regained the lead in the fifth with a pair of unearned runs.  Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) reached on a two-out error, stole second and scored on a Bryce single up the middle.  Butler, who had walked between White and Bryce, made it 3-1 as she scored on a single to left by Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova College).

North Alabama responded in the bottom of the fifth as four of the first five batters reached on a single, a double, an intentional walk and an RBI single which kept the bases loaded.  At that point, WSU coach Gary Bryce moved Butler from right field into the circle.  A force out at home and a ground out ended the Lions threat.

The Warriors added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.  Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a bunt single by White.  McGarr scored as Butler reached on an error by the UNA catcher.  Bryce and Lee had RBI singles sandwiched around a gout out by Ingratta.

Butler finished the game in style allowing a pop out and recording back-to-back strikeouts.

Bryce and Butler combined for five of WSU's 10 hits in the win, with Bryce recording three hits and three RBI.

Lee improved to 2-0 by allowing two runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.  Butler notched the save by retiring all eight batters she faced, five on strikes.

WSU will conclude play with a contest against 15th-ranked North Georgia later today.
