Winter Haven, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (13-3 overall), ranked 14th nationally in last week's NFCA Division II Coaches Poll, dropped a 3-1 decision to fifth-ranked Augustana (11-2) Monday afternoon.
The Vikings scored twice in the top of the first on a pair of hits and a Warrior miscue, plus left two runners on base.
WSU scored its lone run in the bottom of the third as
Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) singled and went to second on a single by
Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont. / Galt C.I.).Â
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) followed with a bunt single to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) plated Hentschel, but a strike out and a pop out ended the threat.
The Warriors did not get another runner past first base the rest of the contest.
Augustana added an insurance run in the fifth on a leadoff home run by Jordan Schaffer.
Butler (6-2) went the distance in the circle for WSU allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with 10 strikeouts to one walk.
Jenelle Trautmann (8-1) started for the Vikings and allowed the one earned run on six hits in her six innings of work. She had five strikeouts to one walk. Carley Pickett earned the save with a scoreless seventh recording two strikeouts.
Wayne State will play a doubleheader at Florida Tech on Tuesday.
