Softball Ends Spring Break Trip With 2-1 Win Over New Haven

Warriors head north with a 20-4 record.

Winter Haven, Fla. -- The eighth-ranked Wayne State University softball team (20-4 overall) concluded its spring break trip with a 2-1 triumph over No. 33-New Haven (3-1 overall) Saturday at the Rebel Spring Games.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) had a one-out single and moved to second on a ground out.  White stole third for her team leading sixth theft of the campaign and came around to score on a base hit by Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams).

The Chargers knotted the game at one in the top of the second on a solo home run by Brooke Fisher off WSU starter Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley).

The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when Bryce reached on a walk.  Pinch-runner Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) moved to second on a ground out and scored the eventual game-winning run on a single by Emily Cava (Oakville, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.).

Both teams had five hits in the contest.  Cava led the Warriors with a 2-for-2 performance plus reached on a walk, while Bryce was 1-for-1 with two walks.

Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) improved to 10-0 on the season by not allowing any runs on three hits with 13 strikeouts while tossing the final 5.2 innings in relief of Boehler.  Boehler allowed one run on two hits in 1.1 innings.

Victoria Cabral went the distance in the circle for UNH allowing two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

Wayne State is scheduled to start the Northern portion of its schedule at home on Saturday, March 22nd with a league doubleheader against Walsh.

The 20-4 start to the season is the best for the Warriors since the 2010 squad began with a 22-4 mark, and the second best in the last 21 years.  The 1993 squad also began 22-4.
