CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (13-4, 2-0 GLIAC) opened its GLIAC schedule with two wins over Ashland (10-7, 0-2 GLIAC) on Tuesday evening inside V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. The two games were moved due to poor field conditions and lingering winter weather. The WSU offense exploded in game one for a 12-5 win and pulled out a nine-inning win, 8-5, in game two.
Ashland is ranked 22nd in the most recent NCBWA Top 25 but did not take into effect the two defeats on Tuesday.
Game One (W, 12-5)
The Warriors roughed up one of the best pitchers in the country in 2013. Jake Baldwin (1-1) was the NCBWA Midwest Region and GLIAC Pitcher of the Year. In 2013, Baldwin went 8-0 with a 1.58 ERA.
WSU scored six runs on six hits in the top of the third inning.
Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) and
Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) both picked up two RBI in the frame.
The Eagles picked up a run in the bottom of the third inning on three hits and a WSU error.
David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview) (1-1) was able to limit the damage with an inning-ending strikeout.
Ashland rallied with four runs on two hits and another Warrior error in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Jimmy Jackson (Battle Creek, Mich. / Pennfield) entered to record the final two outs. After five innings, WSU held on to a 6-5 lead.
A pair of three-run innings in the sixth and the seventh innings broke the game back open in favor of the visitors.
Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) highlighted the offensive output in the seventh with an RBI triple.
Jackson picked up his first save of the season, going 2.2 innings allowing just one hit and striking out two Eagles.
Carrell and
Nathan Manis (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) both collected multi-hit games.
Game Two (W, 8-5 Nine Innings)
Carrell continued his hot-hitting with a leadoff double to begin what would be a thrilling game two. Carrell would eventually score on a Cunningham groundout.
Ashland tied the game in the bottom of the first with a double from Tyler Gray. The Eagles took a 3-1 lead with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning.
An RBI double from
Spencer Church (Windsor, Ont. / Holy Names) cut AU's lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning.
The Green & Gold took a 4-3 lead with two runs in top of the fifth inning on two hits and two AU errors. Carrell and Clifton drove in runs during the frame.
Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) replaced starter
Brandyn Hall (Sylvania, Ohio / Northview) as AU's comeback attempt picked up steam. Greg Ludwig gave AU a 5-4 lead with a two-run, two-out, pinch-hit double.
In its last chance the Warriors came through with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5. Carrell and Clifton both drew walks before Cunningham drove in his 24th run of the season for the all-important run.
Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) (2-0) pitched the final 3.1 innings to pick up the win after blowing his first save of the season.
WSU scored three runs on three hits and an Eagle error to take an 8-5 lead in the top of the ninth inning. Walker drove in the game-winning runs with a two-run single to left field.
Daniel Peake added an RBI with a single to right field.
Carrell picked up his ninth multi-hit game of the season to finish the doubleheader 4-for-6 with five runs scored, two RBI and two walks. He is now hitting .510 on the season, which leads the GLIAC and ranks 13th in the nation. Cunningham drove in five runs in the two games to bring his season total to 24, giving him the GLIAC lead over Grand Valley's Giancarlo Brugnoni.
The Warriors will play a three-game series against No. 12 Grand Valley this weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich. on the campus of Davenport University due to poor field conditions.
