Men's Tennis Earns 8-1 Win Over Michigan Tech

The Warriors win the first six matches in their GLIAC home opener to cruise past the Huskies and improve to 3-1 in the GLIAC.

-- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (4-6 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) won its 2013-14 conference home-opener Saturday, winning the first six matches against Michigan Tech University (8-5 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) on its way to an 8-1 victory at the Multipurpose Indoor Facility.

The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Huskies by winning all three matches in doubles. The duo of senior Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) and Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, while the Wayne State pair of senior Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France) posted an 8-4 win at the third flight in doubles.

Wayne State earned its third point after junior Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy) and freshman Stephane Robineau (Paris, France) won in a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles. The pair earned a 9-8 (8-6) victory over Michigan Tech's Felipe dos Santos and Pedro Rodriguez, handing the MTU duo their first conference loss of the season and just second overall.

WSU clinched the match with two straight-set wins in singles. Charriere, playing in his first match at No. 1 singles, came from behind in a second-set tiebreak to post a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead. Fazyl Kechai clinched the match win for Wayne State with his victory at No. 4 singles. He also won in a second-set tiebreaker to win 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

After splitting sets, Robineau won all six games in the third set, earning a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 triumph at No. 2 singles for WSU.

Senior Gopinath Menta (Hyderabad, India) won his first singles match for Wayne State, posting a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. Keating also earned a straight-sets win at the sixth flight, winning 6-4, 7-5 to earn Wayne State's eighth flight win of the day.

The Warriors return to action Sunday for a 10 a.m. match against Lake Superior State at the Multipurpose Indoor Facility.
