WSU Baseball Continues Winning Ways Against UMSL

The Warriors are 5-0 to begin the 2014 season.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (5-0) won its fifth straight game to begin the season, 5-2, over Missouri-St. Louis (0-3) on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons and Warriors were tied 2-2 in the seventh inning but the Green & Gold scored three runs in the final two innings to stay unbeaten.

The Warriors recorded a triple play in the first inning with two runners on following a fly out to right field. Chirs Gebara ( (Troy, Mich.) threw home to the tagging runner and the catcher Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) threw down to second to record the third out f the play.

UMSL struck first with a run in the bottom of the third inning on two hits.

Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) singled home Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) for WSU's first run of the game, tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning.

The Warriors took a 2-1 lead after an A.J. Matos (Southgate, Mich. / Detroit Western) single back up the middle in the top of the seventh inning.

The Tritons responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) and Spencer Church (Windsor, Ont. / Holy Names) both drove in runs with singles in the top of the eighth inning to give WSU a 4-2 advantage. Cunningham added to WSU's lead with an RBI-single in the top of the ninth inning.

Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) (1-0) and Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) combined for the final three innings, with Ruch picking up his third save of the season. Horn allowed one hit over 2.1 innings and struck out two UMSL batters.

David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview) went 6.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on eight hits and collected three strikeouts.

Church finished 4-for-4 with an RBI while Gebara collected three hits.

WSU will meet St. Joseph's for the the third and fourth times this season with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 3 PM.
