Men's Tennis Hosts Northwood With GLIAC Title On The Line

The Warriors can earn a share of the GLIAC regular-season championship with a victory over the Timberwolves on Monday.

DETROIT -- Two of the top men's tennis teams in the GLIAC conference are set for a showdown Monday afternoon in Detroit, as the Wayne State University men's squad hosts first-place Northwood University in the last regular-season match of the season for both teams.

The 2 p.m. match is a big one in terms of the GLIAC regular-season championship. Northwood has clinched at least a share of the regular-season title with a record of 9-1, but should Wayne State (8-2 in the GLIAC) beat the Timberwolves, the Warriors would earn a share of the GLIAC title. Including this season, the Timberwolves have won 20 straight GLIAC titles, dating back to 1995, while the Warriors last earned a league championship in 1981.

Wayne State has won six of its past seven matches, with its only loss coming at Ferris State University. Northwood, ranked No. 37 in the nation, is coming off a thrilling, 5-4 win over the Bulldogs on Thursday. Northwood's one loss of the season came earlier in the season at Tiffin University.

All of the other regular-season matches in the conference have been completed.

Freshman Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) earned the GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" award on April 15. WSU seniors Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) each have moved into the top five in singles and doubles victories after their performances so far this season. FitzGerald and Joseph are fourth and fifth in career singles wins with 48 and 46, respectively. FitzGerald is third in career doubles victories (56), while Joseph is just behind in fourth (53).

Following the regular-season finale Monday, the Warriors have already clinched a spot in the 2014 Men's Tennis GLIAC Tournament, which is set for April 25-27 at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.
