Tiffin, Ohio -- The sixth-ranked Wayne State University softball team (23-5 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) split a conference doubleheader at Tiffin University (15-8 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors won the opener 7-0, and the Dragons took the nightcap 1-0 despite only generating two hits.

Game 1
WSU grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) had a one-out infield single and continued to second on an error.  She advanced to third on a fly out and scored as Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova College) reached on an error.

The Warriors added to their lead in the fourth as starting pitcher Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) singled.  After a fielder's choice, Allie Buchanan (South Lyon, Mich.) moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth), reached third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich.).

Tiffin had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the fourth as the first three batters all singled.  Lee recorded a foul out and back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

Wayne State responded with a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.  White had a leadoff single and scored on a double by Emily Bryce (South Lyon, Mich.).  Bryce moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ingratta and scored on a single by Emily Cava (Oakville, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.).  Lee then doubled but back-to-back punchouts ended the frame.

In the top of the seventh, WSU tallied three runs.  Cava had a one-out single and Lee walked before Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) delivered a two-out pinch-hit single.  Williams then plated Spano and pinch-runner Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) with a single.

Lee struck out seven and did not walk a batter while limiting the Dragons to six singles to improve to 11-0 and record her fifth solo shutout of the season (she also had two shared shutouts).  Williams went 3-for-4 with three RBI, both the three hits and three RBI were career bests for the Warrior shortstop.  White, Cava and Lee each had two hits in the contest.

Madison Yanek (4-4) went the distance in the circle for Tiffin and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Game 2

The second game was a 0-0 pitchers duel through six innings between Wayne State sophomore Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) and Tiffin's Taylor Spang.

Boehler allowed just one hit heading into the top of the seventh, a leadoff single in the second by Jena King.  After retiring 16 of the next 17 Dragon hitters (allowing just a hit by pitch), King smacked a one-out home run to right field in the seventh.

The Warriors had chances to push a run across against Spang having a runner at second with one out in the second; runners at second and third with two outs in the fourth; a runner at third with one out in the fifth; and in the seventh when Lee pinch-hit and recorded a double to right center starting the inning.  A sacrifice bunt moved her to third, but a pop out and a ground out ended the contest.

Boehler (1-1) notched her first complete game of the season striking out four and not walking a batter.

Spang (6-1) blanked the Warriors on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Hentschel recorded half of WSU's hits going 3-for-3 in the game.

Wayne State will conclude its weekend road trip with a Sunday doubleheader at GLIAC leader Ohio Dominican (12-20 overall, 8-0 GLIAC).
