Softball Season Ends With 2-0 Setback In World Series

Final game for three Warrior seniors - Burnard, Ingratta and White

Box Score Salem, Va. -- The 2014 Wayne State University softball season (46-12 overall) came to an end Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 setback to Southeastern Oklahoma State (44-19 overall) in the second elimination game of the Division II World Series.

WSU had a few scoring chances early in the game.  In the top of the first, it appeared that senior outfielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont.) had beaten out a grounder but was ruled out at first.  Redshirt freshman pitcher Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont.) followed with a single up the middle, but junior catcher Emily Bryce's (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) smash up the middle was deflected by the Savage Storm pitcher Mindy McElroy to shortstop Haley Strawn, who then threw to second for the inning-ending force out.

In the bottom of the first, leadoff batter Jessica Simmons laced a triple to right center and scored on a squeeze bunt by Lacie Cook.

Senior second baseman Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.) led off the second with a single but a fly out and double play ended that threat.

Freshman right fielder Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich./Rogers) had a leadoff single in the third, but after failing to get down a sacrifice bunt a strikeout along with a caught stealing ended the frame.

White was ruled out again on a grounder to short leading off the fourth and Butler's line drive to right was snared by Laramie Beal.

Ingratta singled down the left field line on an astro turf bounce to start the fifth.  A sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont.) moved Ingratta to second.  She advanced to third on a groundout by pinch-hitter Ali Lince (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) before being stranded at third.

Simmons beat out a swinging bunt with one out in the bottom of the fifth.  She stole second on the second pitch, then stole third three pitches later with the throw getting away from the Warriors allowing Simmons to score her second run of the game.

White's final collegiate at bat was a bang-bang play again at first and, for the third consecutive time, was called out to end the sixth.

Butler set down SEOS in order in the sixth on just 10 pitches with two strikeouts increasing her game total to 10 to no walks.

Butler then led off the top of the seventh with a double to left center which just missed going out by less than two feet.  She advanced to third on a ground out, but two more groundouts ended the contest.

Butler and Ingratta each had two hits for the Warriors, while Hentschel had WSU's other hit.

Butler allowed just seven hits and the two earned runs by saw her record fall to 25-7.

McElroy (28-11) struck out just one and did not walk a batter, but faced just 24 batters and threw just 63 pitches in the game.

It was the final collegiate contest for White, Ingratta and senior first baseman Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich./Plymouth).
