Kamenko's Win Clinches Seventh Straight Victory For Women's Tennis

Wayne State defeated Grand Valley State 5-4 on Sunday.

– The Wayne State University women's tennis improved to 7-0 on Sunday with a hard fought 5-4 win over the previously unbeaten Lakers of Grand Valley State (4-1).

Poor weather conditions forced the two squads to compete in the Multipurpose Indoor Facility.

The Green & Gold led 2-1 after the doubles portion of the competition. At No. 1 doubles, Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / Ecole Secondaire Felix-Leclerc) had an 8-2 victory. At second doubles, Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) came back from being down 4-7 and won in a tie-breaker 9-8 (6).

Grand Valley State won at No. 3 doubles.  

Moore collected a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles while Mitrache won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Grand Valley State won three points at No. 3, 4 and 6 singles.

Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S. S.) gained the match winning point for the Warriors at No. 5 singles in her deciding set 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

The Warriors will be back in action at ITA Regionals in Allendale, Mich. beginning Friday.
