DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (3-6, 1-4 GLIAC) dropped a midweek contest to Saginaw Valley State (6-3, 3-2 GLIAC) on Tuesday night, 3-1. The Warriors took the first set 25-20 but the Cardinals responded by taking three straight, tightly contested sets, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23. Set number four featured six ties and four lead changes.
SVSU led 4-3 before a 7-0 WSU run, capped by a kill from reigning GLIAC North Player of the Week
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) gave the home team an 11-3 lead. The Cardinals stormed back to trim the deficit to 13-10 but the Warriors would never relinquish the lead and would take the set 25-20.
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) closed out the win with a kill.
Following a kill from
Grace Frazee (?Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) the Warriors trailed 12-8 in the second set. SVSU would continue to control the game and led 16-8 after a 4-0 run. A SVSU attack error trimmed the Cardinals lead to 23-21 and 24-22 but a kill from Sidney Scott would give the Cards the 25-22 set-two win to tie the match at 1-1.
A SVSU service error would bring WSU within a point, 11-10, in favor of the visitors in set three. WSU pulled within a point at 18-17 but the Cardinals would regain control and take the set 25-23.
WSU led 12-8 after a kill from
Ellen Oppenheim (St. Joseph, Mich.) in the fourth set. SVSU would regain the lead at 14-13 afer a Warrior attack error. Moore connected for a kill to give the Green & Gold an 18-15 advantage. The Warriors continued to lead at 22-19 and 23-21 but SVSU took the final four points to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
Weiss led the offense with 19 kills while hitting .410. Moore posted her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs.
Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) aided the defense with 12 digs.
Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) dished out 36 assists.
The Warriors will play at Malone in Canton, Ohio on Friday night at 7 PM.
