CANTON, Ohio -- Following its five-match homestand the Wayne State University volleyball team (3-7, 1-5 GLIAC) traveled to Malone (4-7, 2-4 GLIAC) on Friday night. The Pioneers controlled the entire match and swept the Warriors, 25-23, 25-14 and 25-22.
WSU hit just .100 compared to MU's .236.
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) gave WSU a 5-2 lead early in the opening set. The visitors led until Malone took four consecutive points later in the set to take a 17-12 lead. The Pioneers would not
relinquish the lead and won the game 25-21.
The second set was tied at 12-12 after a MU attack error. However, the Warriors would only collect two more points the rest of the set as Malone would take the 2-0 match lead with a 25-14 set victory.
The Pioneers continued their momentum into the third and final set and led the Warriors 5-0 to open the set and eventually 10-5. Following a WSU ball-handling error, MU extended its lead to 14-6. Wayne State would fight back to trim Malone's lead to 24-22 near the end of the final set but the Pioneers collected the final point to finish the sweep.
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.),
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) all finished with seven kills while
Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) tallied 20 assists.
Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) posted a team-high 14 digs.
The Warriors will stay in the area and play at Walsh on Saturday at 4 PM.
