NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- After a disappointing loss at Malone on Friday night, the Wayne State University volleyball team (4-7, 2-5 GLIAC) responded with a dominant 3-0 win at Walsh (0-11, 0-7 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon. The sweep included a 25-10 thrashing in the opening set.
The Warriors began the first set with an 11-1 lead following a kill from
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron). WSU had a chance to keep the Cavaliers in single-digits at 24-9 but WU would reach 10 points before the Warriors closed out the set with a 25-10 win.
Walsh started the second set better as it led 7-6 after a kill from Devin Hummel. The set was tied at 14-14 before the Warriors started to find their stride.
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) connected on a kill to give the visitors a 19-17 lead.
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) posted back-to-back kills to keep WSU ahead 21-18. WSU would go on to win the game 25-21 on a WU attack error.
It looked as if Walsh had intentions of forcing a fourth set after it took a 10-5 lead to begin the third set forcing a WSU timeout. Following the conversation with first-year head coach
Tim Koth, the Warriors rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 12-11 lead. later in the set, WSU went on another 7-0 run tot ake a 19-16 lead/ The Green & Gold would win the set 25-20 and win the match 3-0.
Norscia led WSU with nine kills while
Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) tallied 25 assists.
Wayne State will return to Midtown next weekend for a pair of home matches beginning with Hillsdale on Friday at 7 PM.
